TTC after 35

Facebook fail

I saw a status update from my best friend from kindergarden.  It said 11 weeks and I am craving hershey's kisses.  I called DH and said well you know she is the same age as me and it happened for her.  Then I went on and on about how it means that maybe things will work out for us and blah, blah, blah.

I now know that there is a facebook game that "raises awareness for cancer" where you put in your shoe size and say what you are craving.  I had to call DH back and explain.  I think that he is still laughing at me.

Re: Facebook fail

  • I saw a bunch of those on my FB page too so I figured it was some stupid "awareness" campaign thing. The only thing it makes me aware of is how douchey some of my FB friends are. LOL.

All those types of things and the copy and paste to show your support for this or that are really starting to get on my nerves. If you really want to raise awareness or show support for a cause I'm pretty sure there a ton of better ways to do it than by changing your status on FB. That's just my two cents though.

  • I only had one friend put it as their status.  When there is multiple then I can usually figure it out even if I have to google it.  I also don't like the cut and paste things.  I also get text messages from my sister saying I am sending this to all of my sisters because I love you.  I am always so confused because I am her only sister and it doesn't go to her sister-in-law.

  • I saw this too. I didn't like it. I figured out that it was a cancer awareness thing and that just made me roll my eyes. I am all for raising awareness, but I don't like how they're doing it.

  • I read this on a friend's page. I fell for it until I read the message sent to my inbox explaining the whole thing. I usually don't mind silly messages but I just felt this was the wrong thing to do. Maybe because I am constantly thinking about this now but it just seemed really off.

  • There was a thread over on the IF board today about this stupid thing.  One person over there actually went on FB and put in her status that if anyone was going to do this, they should delete her as a friend first.  Kudos to her, and thank god no one in my feed has done it...yet.  I would have gone ballistic if I'd seen it and hadn't known....

  • My friend posted "I'm 11 weeks and craving Reeses penut butter cups". When I saw that oin Facebook I cried for at least 20 minutes. I texted a friend and said how unfair it was that she is pg with number 3 and I can't even have one!  She called me and informed me that she is NOT pregnant and that it is just a thing going around. I was relived but pissed. It's not right to put on facebook!

  • This is why I'm glad I don't do facebook.  My DH does and was saying something about it.  I just ignored it when he told me some of the people who were doing it.  Figured it was something like that.  Crazy!!!

What I don't get is, how does it raise awareness for something if I'm not even aware of what I'm supposed to be aware of by reading it?  I've been bombarded by those all day today too.

I remember maybe a year or so ago the first time they did this it created some buzz and was picked up on the news. That one had something like post the color of your bra and something else. Since it was a story that was picked up by the news I guess they considered it a "success" even though I don't really think it did anything actually for breast cancer (no money raised for research, no info about getting check ups, etc)

Since then, every once in a while they do this again but with different things. What people don't realize is that just because it created a little buzz a year ago it's old now so move on and it isn't actually contributing ANYTHING to the cause.

I actually posted a link to the Susan G. Komen website and suggested people do something more constructive if they really want to help the breast cancer awareness cause. I think I ruffled a few feathers, but I'm tired of seeing these stupid "code" statuses.

I can mostly ignore these types of posts on FB but I guess since I'm TTC I just don't find posting fake pregnancy statuses amusing at all.

  • I just saw this on fb today too.. I think it is ridiculous.  I am all for Breast Cancer awareness but how does THAT raise awareness?  I have a friend whose single daughter has a baby and is in a bad relationship.  Her daughter posted the "weeks and craving" thing and then my friend had to call ALL their relatives to explain!  Apparently one saw it and then called EVERYONE to say that there was another scandalous pregnancy in the family.

  • Thankfully (?) there is a competing one where it's shoe size and time (so it reads '8 in and 20 mins', for example). Just about as bad as last year's 'where do you like to put your purse' (I like it on the kitchen table)...it's all very stupid, has been shown to be a fake campaign and does nothing. I public call out my friends on FB for falling for such and obvious scam.

  • I received the "directions" to do this in my inbox along with 30 other friends from HS.  Here is what the reaction was:

"Jess:  My dear friend Jen just had a double mastectomy (mom, 2 young kids) and went through chemo. I don't want to be a wet blanket, but many women who had breast cancer are STERILE due to surgery, or the side effects of chemo. Joking about pregnancy can be really insensitive for some of these brave ladies. Please spend your time pushing mammograms and doc visits. Awareness isn't the problem. We need a cure!"

"Me:  Yep, I agree with Jess. Groups that support Survivors of Cancer, child loss, miscarriage and infertility are pretty up in arms about this one in particular. It would suck to be bombarded on FB with these updates if you were struggling with any of these issues. I'm all for a reminder to get an exam or where to donate, but unfortunately I think this one can inflict more pain than anything else. I know your heart was in the right place though!"

"Fertile person from HS:  My uncle has breast cancer. He is not offended. He sees it as raising awareness and being supportive. Basically no matter what you do these days someone is going to be offended. You can't please all the people all the time."

It is taking everything in me not to post a nasty response to her or even something like "well be thankful for your children and that you have no concept of the emotional and financial toll infertility can take.  It's bad enough to see real pregnancy announcements pop up unexpectedly, but fake ones are cruel", but I am trying to restrain myself.
