Tums???

So I have just been informed that Tums are not ok to take.  This is from my lil sis whose Dr. told her that with both her pregnancies.  I have been eating them like candy cause the hb is so bad.  Anyone else hear of this?/

Re: Tums???

  • I was told tums is okay to take as much as needed for the acid reflux.

  • No.  That's on my midwife's approved list.

Why don't you ask your own doctor?  I'm not fond of second-hand medical advice.

Not sure you can even get rolaids since the big recall.  I kind of miss them.  Tums are gross.

Hadn't heard about the recall!  I stopped using them after I got pg with DD and then after she was born, my reflux hasn't really acted up, so I haven't needed them.  I did like them better than Tums though because they had the chewy kind.  :)

  • I don't agree.  I think they are harmless when taken as instructed.

  • All of the paperwork I got from my first appointment with my midwife says Tums is perfectly safe to take during pregnancy.

I would not have survived 2nd and 3rd tri without a bucket of tums. I popped them like sweet tarts. You might have better luck with Zantac though if your problems persist.

Agreed. Zantac is the only way I survived the 3rd tri heartburn.

  • Tums are on the safe list from my OB.  I took them for a while, but they never really helped with DS's pregnancy, so I figured why take something that isn't helping?

  • Tums and Zantac = my savior through my first pg and so far my second as well...your sister gave you the wrong advice unfortunately.  If you get the smoothie or wild berry Tums they are actually decently ok to stomach.

  • I asked my NP this, and she said it's fine as long as you don't overdo it.  If you pop them like candy, that's overdoing it!  I've heard the calcium can get absorbed by your placenta an age it early.  But taking once or twice a day is ok.
