Doctors refuse to treat children who are not vaccinated

I saw on The Today Show this morning that some pediatricians are refusing to treat children who are not vaccinated after a 7 week old baby contracted pertussis from the waiting room from a non-vaccinated child (linke: https://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/44356327/ns/today-today_health/t/no-shot-no-doc-pediatricians-refuse-unvaccinated-kids/).

Here is another link to an article from a UK newspaper that also features a similar story: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1363612/Vaccinate-child-doctor-U-S-medical-practitioner-tells-parents.html

I just find this interesting because I am writing an essay on vaccinating children for an assignment this week, so perfect timing for me I guess.

I can see the pros and the cons to this decision, and as always, this is a hot issue.  Anyway, just thought I'd share the news.  Feel free to discuss!

Eta 2: I originally typed that the baby died because I didn't read the article thoroughly.  The baby is a healthy 7 year old girl today :)

  • I can't say I disagree with it. A poor family is missing their baby because of a completely preventable disease. My hospital offers the pertussis vax booster to all new moms in the hospital, I got it myself.

The baby was in the hospital for two weeks, and luckily, is a healthy 7 year old now :)  This could have turned out so much worse though!

  • We had to go to a new parent class before the boys were born with our pediatrician. During the class he mentioned that if we don't plan to vaccinate we should not sign up with their practice.

  • Our pediatrician's practice won't see children who are not vaccinated. They made that very clear at our first appointment.

Your OP says the baby passed away.

So it does, lol!  Sorry about that!  For the record, the little girl is healthy!  I blame 'baby brain'.

Our pedi came to the hospital the first day M was born and met her/checked her and verified she had inital vaccines.

What vaccines did they require at birth?  DD didn't have any vaccinations in the hospital because we chose to postpone the first Hep B shot until her one month appointment, but that was the only one they would have given.
