Throwing sippy cups/food: what do you do?

My kids just turned one, and DS is constantly throwing or dangling/dropping his sippy cup or food over the edge of his high chair. We've decided to basically ignore it at this point, but I admit it's really getting on my nerves. I'm wondering if there's a better way to react or combat it? Or is it just a phase that he'll grow out of?

  • For us, it was a phase with DS1, but the twins are doing that too. DS2 will throw his cup over the side and he doesn't get it back. DD will throw her food over the side usually because she's done eating so she gets down. The funny thing is she will start to eat the food off of the floor, so at that point the "clean up " crew comes in (our dogs) and they clean the floor. I'm just consistent, drop cup = no cup, drop food = done eating.

    This exactly.

For a LO it is a game.  If I throw this then she will pick it up for me...rinse and repeat.  It is just another exercise in exploration.

This for us too.  The dropping game as morphed a bit.  .

    Dangle food/drink off the edge
My stern face: NO NO NO
    Babies repeat: NO NO NO
    Pulls back up on tray
    My happy face: Thaaank you!
    Baby happy face!

Repeat a thousand times. I think they just like to see my stern/happy face switch.

But once they actually drop things, we're done.

Haha, this sounds exactly like me! Or they drop it purposefully and say "Uh oh". It has gotten way better the older they have got.

  • I'll try this NONONO thing, but honestly I guess I would need to concurrently get over my anxiety about the amount they still eat from bottles. What I have going on is that my Cal drops food and sippy over the side and then I say "OK, I guess you're done!" But then, because he hardly ate any meal he's eating more from his two remaining bottles. I've actually seen bottles go up a bit for him since the drop-over-the-side thing started, which makes me nuts because I'm trying to get him off bottles.

    Any ideas about that?

Stop the bottles.  Mine could easily suck down 8oz+ from a bottle without even putting it down, but they "graze" much more on a sippy.  A sippy makes milk part of the meal.  Not the entire meal.

I'm not sure if the dropping phased ended around the same time or if it actually did something, but it helped when I'd catch the cup instead of letting it hit the floor.  It was the crash that they loved, and once they stopped getting it, dropping lost its appeal.

    Good luck to us all!

  • We've been struggling with DS throwing food for a while now. We tried saying "no", tried ignoring it, tried ending the meal when he did it, etc. Nothing has really worked too well. Now that we're really pushing solids (DS is in EI because he's behind on eating), I'm hesitant to make throwing=end of meal, especially because he often does it at the *beginning* of a meal, then decides to eat later.

Two things we've had moderate success with:

    1) One or two pieces of food at a time-- that way if he throws it, we're not losing much. Also, he seems to be more interested in eating it if it looks like he doesn't have much of it in the first place (I have no idea why).

    2) "If you don't want it, give it to Mommy"-- this (surprisingly) usually works. If either of them look like they're about to throw their food, I remind them to give it to us if they don't want it. DS has actually gotten in the habit of holding a piece of food out and saying "day dooo" (his version of "thank you") when he doesn't want it. Of course, this doesn't really result in more eating (our overall goal), but at least the food doesn't end up on the floor.

Oh yes, ours do this too! They also started "announcing" that they were going to drop something by saying "uh oh" as they dangled the item over the edge, before following through and dropping it.

That's where i"m torn too. My friend's kids were food droppers and every single time they did it, the mom would take them out of their high chairs and put them in their crib for a short time out. They hated it. THen she'd bring them back for the rest of the meal. It was such a huge PITA but it only took a week of that (consistently, every single time they dropped food) and no more dropped food. I may do that soon. Right now I'm caving and I feed them the food when they start dropping it. But that's getting old.

  • At meals the sippy cups sat on the table.  When they wanted a drink they asked for it, I gave it to them, and they gave it back.  No throwing allowed!

As far as food goes, I kept the amount of food to a minimum on their plates.  As they ate, they got more.  If they threw it, meal time was all done!
