Boiling water for formula

My pedi told me I didn't need to buy water but to boil it. I didn't think to ask how long to boil! How long do you guys boil water?

Re: Boiling water for formula

  • Do you not have good tap water? We just use the sink. It's good enough for us to drink so that's what we use. If it came down to boiling water or buying water, I would probably just buy water. Maybe I'm lazy....LOL.

  • I'm totally lazy and I buy bottled water.  My husband only drinks bottled water anyways.

  • The hospital asked us to boil water for

    public water - 1 month
    well water - 1 year

    or buy bottled water. Then switch to tap water after the month or year (depending on water source).

    We have public water, so we boiled water for about 2 weeks. Then one day I went to make a bottle and realized that the pitcher of cooled boiled water was empty and we don't keep bottled water in the house. So I used tap water (no brita/pur filter since our water tastes fine).

    He didn't sprout any extra limbs and his head didn't fall off, so I just said the hell with it and kept using tap water.

    Unless your tap water is somehow contaminated, you shouldn't have to boil it.

    This.

  • I still boil the water. Our water is safe to drink but i think i'm just crazy.  Eventually I'll stop boiling but since i'm home i put it on in the morning and only takes a few minutes.  I have water already set aside so I use that until the boiled water is cooled.

    This. Get it tested and see. We have well water as does everyone around here. Most people I know their well is fine use it without issue. Some have filters on their fridge anyways (which is what i'd do anyways) or a Brita pitcher to be safe.

    We had ours tested because the pedi said it'd show up in my breastmilk anyways if their was something bad...we were good.

  • If you are worried about contamination, boil. I didn't boil mine, but once I used my mom's tap and he was fussy afterwards. However, boiling water does not eliminate the nutrients in the tap, and if you boil too long, you will concentrate the nutrients in the water, which could be bad for little kidneys (depending on your water). If you bring the water to a boil, that should be enough.
