What do you use for toothpaste?

[Poll]

What do you use for toothpaste? Also, any one else feel grossed out by all of the stuff in the dental industry?... From toothpaste to the actual visit to the dentist's office? This is somewhat spurred from the baking soda post and my curiousity to try DIY toothpaste, but also from noticing last night that my Tom's has SLS in it!

Re: What do you use for toothpaste?

  • I use Crest Pro-Health. Anything else, and my teeth start to get super sensitive again.

  • We use coconut oil/baking soda/stevia/EO for toothpaste, and it works great for us. We use Tom's for DD since at this point, it does kind of need to taste good for her to like brushing her teeth. It still has SLS in it, but I figure we can change her over later.

  • We use a homemade paste made with baking soda, arrowroot, sea salt, vegetable glycerin, and peppermint oil.  It was a rec from another EFFer.

  • I use a natural one (The Natural Dentist) for my kid and then just the most basic toothpaste with flouride for me and DH - so typically its old school Colgate or Aquafresh. We all use The Natural Dentist for mouthwash becuase there are very few I can find without some sort of artificial sweetener and I'm really sensitive to it (bad headache and stomach ache even just from the mouthwash, its not as bad with it in the toothpaste but I can still tell a bit). I would love to switch back to a natural toothpaste but the Tom's one with flouride and no SLS is SO expensive and I have to use flouride. I have a rx toothpaste, too, that I need to start using again now that I'm not nursing anymore.
  • wow. I never thought about my toothpaste!!! I'm a bad EFF'er! I think the recipe above sounds good, I might try that one day! I have a little bit of a buying in bulk on sale issue and have about 3 tubes of toothpaste in the closet upstairs... hahaha

Yea. I thought I was doing good with my Tom's until last night when I realized its chalk-full-of-crap. :(

Curious about this. I'd read last night somewhere that the glycerin in store toothpastes is one of the things to avoid because it creates a false enamel. I'm not sure I understand that all correctly OR maybe vegetable glycerin is different than the kind they use? Do you mind clarifying? Also, what does the arrowroot do?

    Thanks!

I was the same way. We had to go through like three tubes before I could make our own. And that was by myself because DH had to use an SLS-free kind (cold sores). I had all the ingredients for months before I could actually make it!

  • As far as I know veg. glycerin is just like other glycerin in terms of teeth. That's what made me start making my own toothpaste.

I just made a coconut oil/baking soda/stevia/peppermint EO toothpaste but I think I'll switch to what I made my kids which is coconut oil/xylitol.

I've only been using the first toothpaste for a few weeks but I swear my teeth are starting to remineralize already!
