Success after IF

Can exercise, in and of itself, hurt supply?

I don't mean the general concern about dieting/lower caloric intake affecting supply, but is there something about exercise in general that can affect it?

I've been doing WW for breastfeeding moms (which means a lot of extra points) for about a month. And just to be safe, I always make sure to use every single extra activity/weekly point (and often even go over a few points) to make sure I eat enough to not affect my supply. So far, no issues. But this week, the last couple days, Boodle has been getting really upset when nursing which made me wonder if my supply is decreasing and she's getting frustrated. The only thing I've done differently is done a bit more intense workouts this week. Thoughts? My diet isn't any different than it was before.

You can bet I started chowing down on extra (untracked) food the second this occurred to me as an issue. The last thing we need is ANOTHER feeding hurdle (incidentally, she's back to normal today, meaning not wanting to eat more than an oz. or so from the bottle, plus the nursing issues, so I guess the new bottles and alimentum weren't the fix we needed).

  • i think it can. when i make the most milk is when i eat a bunch of food and go take a nap (which also makes me gain weight, of course!). making milk is hard work, so i think anything that depletes us (exercise, stress, or whatever) can hurt supply.

  • Yes...I have heard that it can for some people.  I dont know the exact reasons WHY.  With that said, i worked out 3-5 days a week once I got the go ahead from my doc and my supply was still abundant....

  • I'm with Perry on this one.

My body never wanted to make milk if I screwed with it...so I just had to stay chub and stay out of the gym.

I even tried giving up my precious CF Coke while breastfeeding once, and my milk took a hit.  I started it back after two days and voila, I had milk again.

I think breastfeeding just takes everything you have...and then some.

  • I'm not sure but it was my experience that if I exercised, I need to drink like gallons of water to maintain my supply. My brain/stomach made sure I ate enough. I craved carbs like no other when bfing and working out.

  • I am running ~30 miles a week and lifting weights a couple times a week too.  The only time I notice a supply drop is on the days of my long runs (8-12 miles) AND I don't up my water intake.
