think I'm gonna try IUI

We have been trying to conceive for 2 years and four months.  This was my 7th cycle on clomid, have taken it CDs3-7, or 5-9.  Got pregnant last January but misscarried in February.  Our doctor says he doesn't think we need to do IUI because we know we can get pregnant, but to be honest I am soooo desperate and ready to move on to something different.  I'm also very nervous to try IUI and then not be successful.  I've felt very sad and discouraged lately, this cycle I almost told my husband that I didn't want to try anymore.  Lately I've been keeping all my feelings and thoughts to myself because I don't want him to think "oh there she goes again crying and beind depressed" He has been extremely supportive. This process has really changed me, I am not happy and just want to stay home if I'm not at work.

Anyone have words of advice????

Re: think I'm gonna try IUI

  • Are you seeing an RE or an OB/GYN?  If you're not seeing anRE, it might be time to do so.  Has your husband had an SA?
    Me: 30, Dx Unexplained/hypothalamic amenorrhea
    DH: 31, normal!
    April/May 2011: Menopur + Ovidrel +TI = BFN
    Oct 2011: Menopur + Hcg +IUI = BFP!
    Beta #1 (13dpiui)= 129.7, Beta #2 (15 dpiui)= 305
    PAIF/SAIF always welcome!

  • We are seeing an RE. Husband had two SA's and Ive had Hsg, Laparoscopy, and even had my hormones checked.  We are both perfect.
  • Hi precious.  I have a few thoughts.

Has your OB/GYN tested your FSH or AMH levels?  Do you know your antral follicle count?  I really wish I had known those things a LONG time ago.  Instead, I had an OB/GYN who told me not to worry -- I had plenty of time to get pregnant. Well, she was crazy wrong.  If I had known my ballpark numbers (understanding they are constantly in flux), I would have gotten serious about IVF much more quickly.

When we started to question why we weren't getting pregnant on our own, the first thing my OB/GYN said is that it was reasonable to try clomid cycles and maybe IUI before investigating IVF.  She said that we shouldn't stick with clomid or IUI for more than three cycles.  If you get BFNs after three cycles of clomid, move on to IUI and try again for three cycles.

Given our age (DH will be 36 soon and I'm 35), after three failed clomid + trigger cycles, we moved straight onto IVF because I felt like it was time to get serious. Turns out that we tried IUI once because our first IVF cycle was canceled due to poor response.

I don't know your circumstances, but I can understand trying IUI a couple of times because it's less costly and less invasive.  If you're struggling, I think trying IUI is a very reasonable course of action.

  • Whay does FSH and AMH stand for?
  • AMH, anti-mullerian hormone fertility testing gives an estimate of the remaining egg supply, or ?ovarian reserve?.

A day 3 FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) test is a common method of estimating the egg supply or ?ovarian reserve?.

The first thing I would do is get a new doctor.  If you have been trying for 2 years and 4 months and your doctor is saying just keep trying, there is a problem.  If you wouldn't mind sharing, how old are you?  Not that it really matters, if it was me, I would want to get some more answers and your current doctor doesn't seem interested in finding them for you.  Obviously, the Clomid isn't working so may be time to try something else.  Best of luck to you.
