2u2 & night wakings

So my 18 month old son still wakes up once per night about 80% of the time for milk.  After milk then a little water to rinse his mouth he generally goes back to sleep.  So on a good night this whole process will take only 7-10 minutes from start to finish.

I'm so worried that he will still be doing this when the new LO arrives.  He will be 23 months at the time.

I'm curious - and I plan to repost this on the attachment parenting board -- has anyone had experience with 2 LOs waking up at night -- not multiples?

TIA.

Re: 2u2 & night wakings

  • Boy, do I.  Ds will be 3 in October and still wakes more nights than not.  Usually with night terrors or to come into our bed.  He shares a room with his sister, who wakes multiple times a night from teething.  Oddly enough, if one has a good night, the other doesn't.  Some nights, it's staggered, so I'm up every 90 minutes or so.

Ds' sleep has been better lately (knock on wood), so I'm hoping that dd's sleep will return to her normal 1 night waking.  It's exhausting.

  • Yes, and DH handled the girls wakings when I was still getting up multiples times per night with the baby.

  • Yep. DD is almost 14 months and will wake up from time to time.

That's DH's job now! I'm the only one that gets up with the baby since I BF.

  • When DD was born, DS was teething, so he was up most nights, too.  As a pp said, DH got up with him, and I got up with DD.  Thankfully, my DS doesn't consistently wake up at night, and for the most part does STTN.  But when he was teething, that was NOT true!

Have you just tried giving your DS water over night?  We leave a straw sippy cup of water in DS's crib.  I don't think he drinks it over night, but when going to bed and waking up, he does.  Maybe if you could leave water in his crib, he wouldn't wake everyone up!

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for all the responses ladies.

He won't just drink the water and go back to sleep --

  • It's up to you.  Some kids will stop on their own, but my guess is if he hasn't stopped by 18m it is a habit/routine he likes and he won't stop waking for the milk until it is no longer available.  If you feel the milk at night is not necessary nutritionally, and you want the night wakings to stop, I would stop offering milk in the middle of the night.  Expect a bad night or two in protest of the routine change and then STTN.

  • :raises hand:

I am lucky when DD1 STTN once a week. She usually wakes up once (and even twice - more often than I'd care to admit) a night. It takes about 2 minutes to put her back down, but it still means we have to get up...
