how much do you spend on formula?

i've been debating formula feeding if breastfeeding doesnt smooth out soon...kullen has caught my cold now so im really hoping once we kick that in the butt things will get better...and im just wondering how much formula you go through with twins and approx how much it costs you each month...ive never formula fed so i have absolutely no idea!

Re: how much do you spend on formula?

  • My boys were on Nestle GoodStart and it was $360/month for most of the first year. (A bit less the first few months and last few months when they were drinking less.)

  • We buy the generic Target brand of Gentlease, and on average, we go through 2 cans per week at $20/can, so about $160/month. I'm so psyched to be switching to WCM now.
  • We've been using Similac since the beginning (initially, that is what the hospital gave, and then that is what the pedi liked).  Similac Advance... then at about 7 mo, we switched to Similac Organic (which is about $4-5 a tub more).

A tub used to last us 2.5 days until recently (that was 4 bottles/day at an average of 7 oz ea), which cost $27 = which would give an approximate cost of $330/mo for formula.

  • We used Similac Sensitive, and at our height, we spent $50 a week on formula if we didn't have coupons or checks.

I would start them on a generic and see if they'll tolerate, you'll save so much money!

  • Approx $500/mo Indifferent

That was for Nutramigen, which I would never recommend to anyone unless your kids needed it. Generic all the way, otherwise.

  • At the peak, it was close to $400/mo on Enfamil.  DS was/is a huge eater.

Now we're winding down and it's closer to $100/mo on Sam's Club generic.  Their cans have slightly more than the Target cans do for the same price.

  • It is around $350-$400 a month.  We buy our Similac at Costco where it ends up being the cheapest.  They also allow you to use formula checks as well so that helps too.

  • We were able to get by on the BJs brand which was $20 a can... and I can't remember how much was in it but it was pretty big... until they were taking a 6-8 oz bottle... then Jack was having some spit-up/digestion issues so we switched to Similac and for whatever reason it made a difference, we still got it at BJs and it was I think $25 for a slightly smaller can, but still bigger and cheaper than we could get anywhere else...

  • I admit, I use WIC, it helps out a TON. Especially when one of my guys was on AR and the other on Neosure.

Generic brands are awesome! Target is great and Walmart even has neosure in their parent's choice brand.

  • At its height, we were spending about $40 per week.  Luckily the babies did well on Target's Up & Up formula.

  • After discharged from the hospital we went right to Target brand.  Before we started solids the girls were eating 30oz of formula a day and we were going through 2-3 cans a week.  So it would cost us about $40 a week ( 1 40oz can was $19.99).  So that would put us at about $160 a month.  Looking back it really isn't that bad because we spend more on food from the supermarket now!
  • Dear Boobs,

  • I got the tip to call my insurance company to check to see if formula is covered from the bump.

I called (BCBS) and it is covered, as long as your pediatrician will write a prescription.   It is worth a quick call:)

  • Okay this post is definitely keeping me motivated to continue breastfeeding as long as possible!  I have been very lucky to have a great supply and they seem like they will be great eaters.  Having half a freezer full stash of milk helps out too.
  • Roughly $250 per month. We're still on Neosure and that's painful. We do give them sensitive at night to make them sleep easier, and thankfully we can get the Target generic for that.

A really good network for coupons and checks helps. I've traded a lot online and with other new parents at work. At work we also trade other coupons too. I never need diaper coupons, so we all help each other out and pass stuff around. I've even given old clothes to a coworker for her new grandbaby. I find that networking for this stuff makes life so much easier.
