My VBAC birth story - a success!

Well, it?s official ? we have Baby #2! We welcomed Logan into the world at 1:03 pm on Friday, July 1, 2011. He?s a good looking kid, just like his older brother Liam, and came out with very similar stats, even though he was born 25 days before his due date! Logan weighed in at 6 pounds 4 ounces and was 19 inches long ? and Liam was 6 pounds 9 ounces and 19.75 inches long. And their birth dates are 2 days apart! Go figure!

I woke up at about 3:45 on Friday morning and rolled over to change positions and go back to sleep when I felt a gush ? and I knew right away that my water had broken. I was only 36 weeks and 3 days pregnant, which is a bit early to have a baby, but I knew that if your water broke, the baby was going to have to come out, too! All of a sudden, I was completely wide awake (though in a state of shock that didn?t really pass until about a day later)?so I got in the shower and got ready, then I called the nurse line at my doctor?s office ? and by this time, I was starting to have mild contractions about 6-7 minutes apart. I called my mom and told her she needed to come stay with Liam, and I told Dave that we needed to pack and get ready to go have a baby!

Before we left for the hospital, I went into Liam?s room and watched my baby sleep?I?ll admit it, I teared up quite a bit?I knew that the next time I saw my little buddy Liam, he wasn?t going to be my only baby anymore. My time with him as the one and only was over, and I wasn?t really prepared for that. I kissed my sleeping boy on the head and closed his door.

We got to the hospital around 6:15 am, and at this point, my contractions were about 5 minutes apart and starting to get much stronger. I was checked at 6:30 am and was dilated about 2 cm. Dave and I walked the halls until about 10:15 am, and during that time, the contractions kept coming about 4-5 minutes apart and continued to get stronger. When we returned to the room at 10:15 am, I told my nurse that I wanted an epidural ? enough of the full-on labor for me! She checked me again, and I was dilated 5 cm. I got the epidural at about 11:00 am. I was worried that getting the epidural would slow down labor (and since I was attempting a VBAC, I didn?t want labor to slow down ? my chances of having a successful VBAC were best if things continued to progress at a good pace) ? and though it did slow a bit at first, the tiny dose of pitocin they gave me at 11:30 got things moving along again ? and rather quickly! At 12:30 pm, I was fully dilated, the baby was down, and I was ready to push!

No one (including my doctor) anticipated that I would from 5 cm to 10 cm in an hour and a half ? and Dave had stepped outside for a few minutes to make a phone call and get some fresh air. I had to call him to tell him to come back to the room because it was time to have this baby! By the time Dave got back, my doctor and L&D nurse had everything set up in the room for the baby?s arrival. I started to push at 12:35 pm ? three pushes through every contraction. After about 6-7 contractions, the baby was out! And the doctor showed us the goods ? Bucky was a boy!

Dave got to cut the umbilical cord, which was crazy cool ? and even though Logan was early, he was doing well when he came out, so they laid him on my chest right away. It was such a different experience than with Liam ? Liam?s birth was awesome as well, but since I had a c-section with him, I didn?t get to see him the second he was out, and I didn?t get to hold him until an hour or so later. That?s just the way it goes with c-section babies. I had some tearing (and the doctor had to do a small episiotomy), so it took my doctor about 30 minutes to stitch things up afterwards ? funny enough, longer than had taken him to stitch me up after my c-section 2 years ago!

I feel so lucky ? I got to have my VBAC, and the whole experience was more than I could have hoped for. Logan?s birth was worlds different than Liam?s birth (though both were good experiences) ? and I have a feeling that my two boys will also be worlds different in terms of personality. Liam has always been a very laid back, mild-mannered child, and Logan?well, Logan is already showing signs that he is much feistier! LOL! I?m sure they will be the best of friends, though, and I?m going to love every minute of watching these two brothers grow up together.
