Cant go??

So I am 27 weeks today, and around 30 weeks my mom wanted to have a baby shower in Indiana for me. We live in Florida, but all my family is there. The doctor told me I cant fly after 28 weeks.. I thought it was 34 weeks.. Im having a perfect pregnancy. No complications, Im not high risk.. nothing. I dont understand. What would you do?

Re: Cant go??

  • Can you get a second opinion?

  • Im not sure. I spoke to my mid-wife, not event he doctor. Ive only met the doctor once, I see Vivian every month, and she recommends me not going. And my fiance heard teh conversation, and he's all about, what the doctor says goes... Im so upset.
  • i thought you were allowed to fly until mid-30's.. like 35/36. that's what i have read. i'd ask the Dr. but of course wouldn't go if they didn't feel it was safe.

  • Did the midwife give you a reason for not allowing you to go? Opinions differ on flying at different stages of pregnancy. I'll be flying for work at 34 weeks, my midwives said I can fly at any stage, I just have to be ok with possibly delivering out of state. I have not heard any medical reason for why a healthy pregnant woman with no complications should not be flying.

  • I, too, thought it was the upper 30's that you couldn't fly.

Not to discredit the midwife, but I'd ask the doctor just to compare notes.

If your doctor said you can't fly after 28 weeks, i wouldn't fly after 28 weeks....

  • I disagree with PP - my doctor gave me the cutoff of 34 weeks and I too am having a normal, healthy pregnancy.  If for some reason I wasn't, then I'm sure we'd discuss that and then I'd reconsider.  Since you are also having a normal, healthy pregnancy too, I don't see what the difference is between you and I, and thus, why you couldn't also fly up to 34 weeks.

And I know I might get heat for saying this - but the DOCTOR didn't tell you that you couldn't fly, the MIDWIFE did.  A midwife is not a doctor.   I say you either get a second opinion from a doctor, get the midwife to back up this baseless claim, or just go anyway.

  • My doctor told me to not fly past 33 weeks....I would definitely get the opinion of a doctor. 28 weeks seems pretty early to be cut off from flying if everything is normal in your pregnancy. GL!

I'll refrain from too much heat here, but midwives are every bit as qualified as a doctor to make this kind of recommendation for a normal pregnancy (which the OP is having). I don't feel compelled to seek the opinion of a doctor once I've gotten the opinion of my midwife--that would defeat the whole purpose of choosing one as my primary caregiver. It sounds like the OP has a practice with both doctors and midwives, but that doesn't make the midwife's opinion intrinsically less valid. However, 28 weeks does sound earlier than usual--it's a point I'm sure that many midwives as well as doctors have different opinions on.

  • I agree with the majority of the PP's here: ask the actual DR., not the midwife. If you're having a 'normal' pregnancy, 28 weeks is early by everything I've ever heard or read.

If the DR. gives the okay, make sure DH knows about it so he doesn't give you any flack..:o)

The way i read the OP, her doctor said 28 weeks as well.  WHat I find amusing is you are so quick to blow off a midwife's advice because she isn't a doctor but, YOU, who have no knowledge of the OPs health history feel completely qualified to tell her to blow off medical advice which she got from a medical professional because YOU don't see why you and she are different.  Curious.

To the OP, it seems early to me too.  If my doctor told me 28 weeks, I would ask her why she felt the cut off was 28 weeks.  WHo knows, your doctor may have a reason that will all the sense in the world.  In the end though, even though it does seem early to me, I chose my doctor very carefully and would take her advice.  If you don't feel comfortable with your doctor's judgement, find a new one.  If you are comfortable with your doctor and his/her judgement then, I'd suggest following the advice given.

  • I'd ask the doctor why and if they can't give you a good reason than I would just fly. Also everything your doctor says is only a recommendation you don't have to listen to them.

  • My dr's office also said 28 weeks as well.  Didn't question it since I was flying a few weeks before that.   They tend to be a more conservative practice  but I trust them and do adhere to what they say.

  • Midwife or doctor, both are qualified to make these type of recommendations. However, I have found that what is recommended can vary WIDELY from midwife to midwife, doctor to doctor. Some just tend to be more conservative, as it sounds like yours is. Unless you have special circumstances or health considerations, though, I would not just blindly trust what your doctor or midwife says, especially when it goes against the general recommendations. (Pregnant women are NOT generally told to stop flying at 28 weeks...) If anything, I would bring in information to the doctor's office (pregnancy books, medical articles) that says flying past 28 weeks is acceptable, and ask them point blank why you shouldn't be permitted to fly as well.

And, on a personal note, earlier this week I asked for and recieved a letter from my midwife stating that it would be permissible for me to fly in mid-September when I will be between 32-33 weeks - I'm also going back to Indiana for my baby shower!

Good luck, and I hope you can get everything worked out :)
