I had made this initially for Emma. But Emma was being a sourpuss and didn't want to wear it. In fact, she hates it. I had made her "Lady" Halloween costume and DH's coworker saw a picture. So now, of course, she wants one for her daughter's 2nd birthday. Well, there's no way that I'm making an exact copy of Emma's dress for another little girl. Anything I make, there are never 2 exact ones like it.
So I found a lighter weight brocade to make two more dresses. One for Emma and one for Claire. Claire is a size smaller than Emma and it's hell trying to find a decent dress pattern for fantasy play dresses that isn't Disney. I want something that looks genuine but not Cinderella poofy but not like a night gown.
I get the dress made and put it on Emma...UGH, she dropped on me as the dress was going on and she ripped 2 seams. I wanted to cry. She screamed, wanted it off and couldn't stand it. It could be that I'm always making stuff for her and she doesn't want to stand still for me anymore. I was crushed.
I was ready to throw it away but DH convinced me to keep at it, fix it and try again. So I did. I finished the trim and adjustments on it last night. This fits around a 2T.
If you received this for your daughter at her birthday would you like it or think it was ugly? After Emma's response to it I'm nervous to send this at all. I really hope Claire likes it.

Re: I made this and am nervous to send it...
Yep, my mind is gone. Lol.
It is for dress up or whatever she wants. For the pattern I'm tossing between 2. One is the simplicity costume pattern 5520 for a girl's child size because I like the pattern itself but I'm having a little trouble getting the sizing right for a toddler so I've been using the Simplicity Project Runway patterns for the dress itself. I just alter the length and cut so it goes to the ankles.
I don't like the poofy Disney/Gone with the Wind style costumes for Emma just yet. She's so short that it would be too difficult for her to walk.
Go Phils!!
Very cute! She'll have a lot of fun playing with it!
Squee! Thank you. I'm hoping to get better at making these so I can mail them out to friends as gifts. If I get better at them soon then there might be a Bumpie who gets one for her daughter for the gift exchange.
And hearing that makes me happy. Thank you!
As a former dress up addict, I think it's adorable (unfortunately I don't think DH would entirely approve of this for our son, lol). My mom had made me a princess costume (very non-Disney) when I was about 4, and I wore that thing to beyond death. I think you will make some little girls very happy!
I'm making my son a knight's costume this year. Though I'm leaning towards the musketeer tunic pattern instead.
I hope the little girl that gets this loves it.
This!
I think my next dress to make will be sleeveless and I'll make a cape to go with it.
Our family blog
I think it is really cute!
If I were little again, I would wear that dress. =D
I think it's adorable. However, it totally looks likes something I would make DD for the SCA events I go to during the summer. I have my own SCA garb, I would put DD in it for her own garb.
Which reminds me. I need to get crackin on making DD's SCA garb. Can we say Irish Peasant dress...
