Hi all,
Just want to share my experience for those of you who are GBS+.
At 36 weeks I tested positive for GBS. I was really upset b/c we plan to have our baby at home and I have read about the dangers for the baby of being GBS+. Although my midwives have the antibiotics available, I was hoping to not have to be hooked up to an IV during the birth (it takes 30-45 min to administer the antibiotics, and it must be administered every 4 hours... not to mention the strong dose of antibiotics can increase the risk of thrush/yeast infections... plus they run through your whole body instead of being localized to the very small infected area).
While discussing treatment options, my midwives told me that I could try using Hibiclens as a vaginal/anal wash and we would retest and see if it changes my results. Well, we retested, and yesterday I got a negative result! I still have to rinse with it twice a day up to the birth, and every 4-6 hours during labor, and we will have the antibiotics on hand if I decide to use them.
You can find Hibiclens at your local pharmacy. I use a ratio of 2 teaspoons to 10 fl oz of filtered water - put it in a peri-bottle, and rinse with it two-three times a day. It's not a "douche" and doesn't need to go deep inside - mostly the outside and a little inside. It's really easy and not the "big deal" I thought it would be.
Of course, if you are interested in trying this option, you should talk to your midwives/doctor about this before using it.
Good luck!

I haven't had any problems yet, though i do take a good probiotic daily... Also, it's very diluted.... but thanks for the heads up - if I feel one coming on I'll take action right away!
