Just got the call from my docs office saying I failed the 1 hour glucose test. Now I get to take the fun 3 hour test. She also said I will need to go on a "donut diet" for 3 days before the test. I will need to eat a donut, piece of pie, or something sweet with every meal and before bed for the 3 days before the test to prepare my pancreas for the test.
To some, this may sound awesome but I am not a big fan of sweets so this is going to make me sick.
This also does not make much since to put someone on a diet of that much sugar intake if their body is having problems handling their current sugar intake. To me, it's like telling someone with high cholesterol to eat a big mac with every meal. That's just my thoughts.
She also said that it does not necessarily mean I have gestational diabetes so I am wondering if I do. How many have failed the 1 hour test and passed the 3 hour test? How many have failed the 1 hour and 3 hour test? Now I am all worried about it. ugh!
Re: Failed 1 hour glucose test and 3 day donut diet
Weird, they didnt make me do that for my 3 hour test. I failed it anyway so I'm glad they didnt!
Good luck to you
I have no experience (I passed my 1-hour), just support. In solidarity I will also eat a donut every day for the next 3 days.
Hang in there, from what I hear, plenty of people fail the 1-hour and pass the 3-hour, and even if you don't, everything will still be fine!
Never heard of the "donut diet"...but I would love to be on the "cupcake diet" since that is what I have been craving this week!
My doc told me not to eat a lot of carbs the day before the 3-day test and eat lots of protein. I failed the 1 hour with a 140 but then passed the 3-hour. Do you know what your number was?
I am obviously not a medical professional, but that is werid! I mean, doesn't all the sugar hurt the baby if indeed, you do have GD? I am confused. Good luck with the sweets, I'm a major sweets girl, but not so much since I've been pregnant, so I can imagine how hard that might be!
I hope you pass! GL!

Some info that might be helpful:
https://www.babycenter.com/0_glucose-screening-and-glucose-tolerance-tests_1483.bc
-between 2 and 5 percent of expectant mothers develop gestational diabetes
-between 15-23% of women fail the 1-hour test, but most don't turn out to really have GD (only 2-5% do)
I failed the one hour test by 3 pts. I also was supposed to do the "donut diet" and since I never eat sweets it really freaked me out. I called the nurse and she said I didn't have to eat all the extra sugar just to eat normally and have a couple of extra carb servings a day. I did that and ended up failing the 3 hour test. Now I wish I'd just eaten all the sugar the three days before because I'm pretty sure my body just went into shock from all 100 grams of sugar at one time. I missed two of the cut-offs on the 3 hour test by less than 10 pts. I have since been monitoring my fasting blood sugar and taking 2 hour readings after each meal. Even though I'm eating basically the same diet as before I took the test (actually eating more carbs now than before), my readings have been consistently in the 80s whether fasting or after a meal.
So - while your experience may be different, if I had it to do over again I would amp the sugar up prior to the test.
