Help me work with "Lola"

My husband really, really likes whimsical names, and this is one of the best he's put out there. I really don't want Lola for a daughters name, I always wanted something that would seem professional on a resume or degree when she was older. Can you think of a First name that I could use Lola with? How about a first name that Lola could be a NN to? I don't want my husband to think I just brush off his ideas, but so far his contributions have been Azalea and Christmas. Really. Lola is a step forward.

Re: Help me work with "Lola"

  • I've heard it used as a nn for Lauren.

  • Also maybe, Eloise, Penelope, Chloe, etc. I am trying to think of names with 'lo' in them.

  • It can be used as a NN for Delores, Lolita (not really any better), and Penelope.

    LOVE these two suggestions.

OP, I really don't think Lola is that unprofessional. What seperates it at all from Lilah, Ava, Isla, or any other similar name? However, if it would bug you, it's certainly worth finding a "formal" name. I just don't think Lola is the same as naming a kid CoCo or Trixie or any other nickname.

  • How about using Layla ( or Laila/Leila) instead?

It has a similar sound without the "whatever Lola wants, Lola gets..." connotation.

Lola is often short for Lolita. It means "sorrows" but Layla means "dark beauty."

  • I know a little girl that goes by Lola, her name is Charlotte.

And I totally wanted to name DD Azalea Embarrassed

  • I have always loved the name Lola but my husband didn't want it for a baby name so we actually named our puppy Lola. My great grandma always tells me that Lola isn't a name, but that it is a nickname for Dolores. She grew up knowing a few girls named Dolores that they called Lola.

  • yup, my niece is Lauren and we call her Lola.  It was actually a NN that stuck when a young boy at daycare couldn't pronounce Lauren.  Somehow, he managed Lola, and it stuck. =)

I was thinking this too. Laila/Layla/Leila is one of our fav girl names.

    Lorelei.

<3 this name. So pretty. Lola could work as NN. Really, a NN is what you make of it, even if it doesn't go with LO's name.

    Lauren also would work.

    Here some of my suggestions:

    Lyla

    Lela

    Loleta

    Carol

    Charlotte

    Karlotta

    Laurel

  • Thank you for all your help!

    Lorelei.

I suggested this, my husband said HECK NO. I really like Gilmore girls, he said there was no way I could name my baby a Gilmore girl name. Believe me, Rory and Lane were also tried.

I think names are tricky, what I see as more fun and whimsical, others might see as professional (I was raised very old school). It's all personal, and I understand that. When I think of Lola, I think of a cute little girl which is great, but to be honest I'm not in LOVE with the name (or any name).

And I totally wanted to name DD Azalea Embarrassed

lol I think it's pretty, just not for my daughter. Each person has their own preference, and I don't want to make you think it's a bad name, just not my type!

All the responses so far, THANK YOU!!! I am sharing them with my DH, and he keeps saying "we're making progress!!!" I like Lauren, Laurel, Louise, and a few of the others....

  • Traditionally both Lola and Lolita are diminutives of Dolores. But I think anything with an L or Lo could be a full name with the nn Lola.
