Post partum thyroid issues?

Why not get my posting here started off with a bang!

Did anyone experience any thyroid issues after delivery?  Since day ONE I've been having strange symptoms.  My OB (saw her in July) was sure it was thyroid, but my bloodwork all came back fine.  She even palpated my neck to see if she could feel anything abnormal, nothing.  About 3 weeks ago I noticed my neck was stiff and I was mindlessly rubbing it and I noticed a big lump next to my throat.  *Cue panic*

I had an u/s and it revealed that I have small nodules and cysts all over my thyroid.  Never had thyroid issues before.  My doc told me it was common post partum to have problems like this.  Hmmmm.  The radiology report says "believed to be benign in nature" but of course I'm freaking.

I'm going to see the endocrinologist this week, but I was just curious if its as "common" as I've been told.  I could also use any spare vibes, prayers, juju, etc ;)

Thanks ladies!

  • After having no previous issues, my thyroid went nuts and I became hyper thyroid after Katen was born. Best of luck!

  • PP thyroid issues really are EXTREMELY common. Try not to worry too much.

My OB was convinced that I have thyroid issues when I saw her at my 6 week PP appointment and referred me to an endocrinologist. Not going to lie, I am a slacker and have yet to make the appointment. I think I just wanted some time away from docs, blood tests, etc, etc, etc.

Based on the symptoms I've been experienced, I'm pretty sure my thyroid is all out of whack, but I'm not really too worried about it b/c most PP thyroid issues resolve on their own within a few months.

Good luck at the endo this week. I'm sure you're just fine!

  • I had undiagnosed (though in retrospect obvious) thyroid issues prior to having a baby and then about 6 months pp, my thyroid went bananas and I was off the chart hyperthyroid.  It resolved itself in about 8 months.  It wasn't fun at all.  I'm sorry!
  • I guess what worries me are the nodules and cysts.  I don't blame you on wanting to get FAR away from docs and bloodwork!  I think that's why I'm so frustrated by this whole thing.  Well that, and the lump on my neck that scares the bajezus out of me.

    Thanks girls!

  • My thyroid issues all started with my third pregnancy and then got super crazy after the miscarriages and didn't work themselves out until sometime in my fifth pregnancy.  I'm still on medication and will see my endocrinologist in another two weeks to have him check it since post-partum things may have changed yet again.  So, yes I think it's common for pregnancy and post-pregnancy to cause thyroid changes.

Hope everything turns out okay for you.

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
