This is a post/poll and run about placentas

I can't stay up to see the responses since I work extra early tomorrow morning but....

In my birthing class we were discussing the possibilties for placenta encapsulation and the benefits one might explore. I really hadn't given this too much thought but now I'm excited to find more information from my midwife at tomorrow's checkup. What are your thoughts on placentas? Do you have any plans for yours?

  • I don't want to do anything with it afterward, but I do have in my birth preferences that I want to see it before they take it away. I think it's pretty cool that my body made this new organ over the past 9 months and I want to see what it looks like! That may be creepy to some, but I'm curious. After that, they can take it away.

I feel the same, i am so curious about these things and am really not a squimish person, so ill be taking a good look at mine before disposal.

  • I chose let the drs. dispose of it.... not because I think its necessarily gross. just totally not my thing. I kind of like the idea of planting it, but we don't plan on living here forever, so I would want to plant it somewhere I would always be able to go back and see it/enjoy it and thats just not possible.

plus, I know someone who saved theirs and its been in their freezer for 2 years, and that is gross.

ETA: pp's reminded me that I would also like to see it. I think its pretty cool. and gross looking, but I'm not squeamish!

  • My last placenta gets a special snowflake...it was sent out for testing b/c I pPROM'ed and DD was IUGR. I love special snowflakes! lol This time it's going straight in the trash, though.

  • I was thisclose to answering "blending and eating" just so everyone would have to seriously think about who among us would do that (there's nothing WRONG with that, it's just a little weird).

I would like to see it, I think, but when the time comes I'm willing to bet I have more attractive things to look at so I will probably forget to ask and I won't be sad when it goes in the trash.

  • I voted let the docs dispose of it. I have seriously thought about encaapsulating it, but everything i read says it is a lengthy and expensive process. I do want to get a picture of it tho, just because i think its cool that my body made it!

  • I haven't decided if I want to look at it or not, (as PP mentioned, I'm not squeamish; I'll just have something much more interesting to look at) but I'll definitely have my midwife dispose of it. If I really get concerned about my vitamin intake, I'll go get some supplements from the health food store. And as far as the tree burial...we live in a rental, so I doubt that would be looked upon kindly! Wink

This is me too.  Once it has served its purpose, I don't really care what happens to it, but the science geek in me needs to see what it looks like.

  • I have thought long and hard about it and am having mine encapsulated. There is a gal here is town who is certified and trained to do it. She comes to your house, picks it up out of the fridge where it went immediately after birth, and returns two days later with a bottle of pills. I am the first to admit I am little weirded out by it but we can afford it and it certainly can't hurt.

Yes we are those crazy homebirthing, placenta eating people all of a sudden. Not sure how that happened.

Hhaha. I had a similar swing of birth preferences. I went from "maybe I shouldn't get an epi because of my scoliosis" to here. I've heard rumors that the midwives will encapsulate it so I find out for sure at my appointment which has been pushed back to 4:30.

I love all the responses about those of you who want to see and appreiciate it before disposing it! I didn't think to include that as a poll option. Silly me!! Glad to know there is interest in this amazing organ. My friends think I'm a wee bit crazy for this one but I just think its amazing that your body creates an organ just for the baby and gets rid of it when it is no longer needed. Its neat-o. I'm a nerd. I've accepted it. :)

Someone mentioned wanting to bury and plant over it but not having a spot and that is where I was before researching encapsulation. I'm in an appartment now so that rules out the planting idea. Same with homebirth- which I would prefer but just not out our current living space. We'd get complaints, I'm sure.

Did it help answer any questions regarding her birth/complications? I've never heard of this testing and I'm interested to know what they can determine from the delivered placenta.
