Making Unpaper towels ?

I'm sure this gets asked all of the time, but the search function on these boards stink.  I'm considering making unpaper towels.  My thoughts are to purchase flannel for one side and birdseye cotton for the other.  Any thoughts on these materials or other preferences?  What szie do you recommend?  Would a kamsnap hand pliers work ok for adding snaps?

My husband thinks this project is silly "since paper towels are so cheap" but I have a pang of guilt every time I reach for one which seems to be a lot since starting solids with LO.

Thanks!

Re: Making Unpaper towels ?

  • I'm not very crafty, so I bought a couple dozen white washcloths from Kohls.  They're really easy to bleach if I need to, and wash really well.  If you decide you don't want to make them, buying them is pretty cheap!

  • I have never made them but here is a tutorial. https://cottontailbabies.org/2011/01/unpaper-towel-tutorial/

BFP#1: EDD 5/7/2010 born on 5/20/2010. A little girl named Emily.

    BFP#2: m/c 10/29/2012 EDD was 6/21/2012 Baby Hope was 6 weeks 3 days.

BFP#3: Twin B stopped growing at 8 weeks and 5 days. Found on 8/10/2014. EDD was 2/26/2014. Twin A is still doing great and due date is 2/26/14.

  • That's what mine are made from and I don't even remember exactly what size I made them, other than they're about the same size as a paper towel.  And the pliers from KAMsnaps would would great to put on snaps if you want to do so.  I haven't added snaps yet to mine, I just wrap them around an old paper towel tube and call it good for now.

  • I would love to make some of these too. I found them on etsy but would rather make them myself.

Me too.   I need a project.

  • I found some on etsy that were just thin flannel (like cloth wipes) and serged on all 4 sides. That would be an easy project!
  • I posted about these not long ago! I'm sickened by our paper towel obsession!

I bought a 12 pack of microfiber cloths for $10 at Target and might get some more. They're the same size as a paper towel- love them! I found them in the Auto section- way cheaper there than the cleaning section for the same dang thing!

  • Lurker here:

I cut up DH's old undershirts and use them as paper towels. I like them because you can toss them in with whites and use bleach to clean. They aren't super absorbent per se; but they do the job the majority of the time. And DH is seemingly always going through shirts, so I have an endless supply!

  • a long while ago I made a TON of flannel cloth wipes in 3 different colors/patterns and I have three wipes containers that I covered in fabric to match each set of wipes. One set goes in Ds1's room, one set goes in DS2's room and one goes in the kitchen. The one in the kitchen is used for napkins, spills, wiping faces amid hands, cleaning tables, etc. I still have a roll of paper towels on the counter but it is more because I think DH would divorce me (exaggerating of course) if I got rid of them, but he is the only one that uses them so they last much longer. As I use these wipes, I toss them downstairs and they get washed either with regular laundry or CDs.
