A friend of mine recommended blackout shades for baby's room. If baby's room had normal sized windows, I would have bought and hung them already...but, baby's room has a HUGE window (I think it was about 80" tall when we measured) and I'm not sure if hanging curtains to cover the whole thing is going to look stupid, as well as if it is really necessary. PBK has 96" blackout curtains that match our bedding so we could hang a curtain rod at the top of the window and it would cover the whole thing. Right now, there is a nice set of wood shades on the window but they only cover the square part of the window and not the half-moon portion at the top. I'm wondering if we really need to cover the top part of the window, or is the baby going to sleep no matter how light or dark the room is? We are just renting this house for a year or so while we build, so baby will probably be a year old when we move into our new house.
Here's a picture of the window (not a great pic since I took it with my cell phone)
Soo...1) do we need to cover the whole window, and 2) do you think hanging curtains that long will look dumb? Thanks for your help!
Re: Need help with window coverings for baby's room
We have an odd sized window in our nursery too and tight budget so we decided to go with Home Depot's paper blackout shades. They are easily cut to fit. I figure most of the time they will be clipped up and not noticeable and you can't beat the price.
Hope this link works

I would say yes to covering the top part of the window. It can be very bright in the mornings.
Normally, I'm a huge fan of buying a few curtain panels to stretch across the whole wall, but this is an oddly shaped wall lol.

I wouldn't do black out curtains, only because you don't really want your LO getting use to a completely black room, it's hard to duplicate elsewhere (other houses, hotels). We have blinds on DS's room but that's it. He can take a nap in his room in the middle of day with it pretty light in there. I
just figure with all things related to our LO's, if you get them use to one thing, they are going to have issues with the opposite. Wipe warmers (you wont always have one and what happens then), bottle warmers (we got DS use to room temp so if we were out it wasn't an issue), Nose (we didn't decrease the noise in the house when DS was a baby, now we can literally have a dinner party at the kitchen table, which shares a wall with DS's room, and he doesn't wake up).
Yes, that's the other problem -- it's a vaulted ceiling so the ceiling isn't straight across above the window. It rises up in an inverted V on the same wall, so the ends of the curtain rod will practically touch the ceiling to get it to cover the window. Argh! I may take advantage of the PBK design service at our store and have them come up with some ideas.
Some kiddos do OK without blackout shades - for us, I was frantically shopping at 8 weeks to find blackout shades! DD was not a good sleeper and not only woke up due to sunlight but also car lights from passing cars. If you don't do blackout shades now, you might just have a "backup" plan for what you'll do if your LO ends up like mine :-)
Side note: DD could go to sleep in the light, but it was the transition from dark to light (sun rising, cars passing) that woke her up. As an exhausted mama that was torture for me, and she wasn't getting the sleep she needed.
