Success after IF

Any dental peeps out there?

So I hate the dentist but I went (need help with some teeth) and they said I need a "deep cleaning" which costs 800.00 because its been so long.

It seems like QUITE the cost. I mean, almost 1K to clean my teeth?! COME ON!

Is there any difference between the 130.00 cleaning and the 800.00?

Any solutions?

  • Go get it done... It sucks big time...But if you don't it will only get worse.  Trust me.  I had to have it done after I had the twins. And then you go in every 4 months instead of every 6 months after this. That way they keep up with the cleaning and don't have to do deep cleaning.  You're insurance should cover most of it.

  • My hubby hates the dentist and didn't go for awhile but the last couple years he's been going. They did charge a bit more for his cleanings, and he needed them every 3 months instead of 6 months, but I'd say they were more like $200, not $800! That seems outrageous. Do you have insurance that covers any of it? I'd probably go to a new dentist if it were me.

  • I would get a second opinion.  My FIL is a dentist and he was just talking about this the other day.  He had a patient who moved to a different state and needed a teeth cleaning.  His prior patient was quoted over $1000 for a cleaning.  He told her to go see someone else and that it was highway robbery.

He said even if it's been a long time between cleanings, there is no reason it should cost that much.  But....he lives in Idaho and we live in Seattle.  So COL is definitely a factor.

  • My Mom's a dental hygienist. The "deep cleaning" is known as root planing and it's pretty common. You usually have to be numb for the procedure as they are cleaning below your gum lines. Because you have to be numbed, the procedure is typically broken down into 2 appointments (one appointment for 2 quadrants). The appointments generally last a little over an hour. There is a huge difference as the deep cleaning will go beyond your gum line and will involve more than just the general scraping and polishing. Root planing is usually done on patients who have deep gum pockets (generally measuring 5 and up). Good luck!

This exactly!  (Except my mom is not a dental hygienist...my DH is a dentist.)  The cost is actually about right, depending where you are.  In the area of PA that we lived before DH joined the Navy this type of cleaning runs about $150-200 per quadrant...so about $600-800 total.  PP's are correct too...you will most likely be told you need to be seen every 4 months instead of every 6 to make sure things are staying healthy.  Smile

  • All of this exactly! Sorry you have to have this done but it really works. I am a treatment coordinator and my dad is the dentist. Also look into something called arestin (google it they have a lot of info on their site) it is a locally placed antibiotic- straight into the gum pocket to kill off any bacteria. It is a great adjunct to the deep cleaning. See if you can get any of it covered by your rx coverage. We usually bring people back every 3 months for the first year then every 4 months after that for maintenance. If you have anymore questions feel free to follow up!

My DH is a dentist too!  I was an assistant before Audrina was born.  The costs seems right.  Scaling and Root planing is very very important if you have deep periodontal pockets (the nonattached tissue).  You need to remove the bacteria and build up since it has been a long time.  If you just did a normal cleaning it would be doing yourself a disservice.  It you don't have this done and it is need you it will just keep getting worse.  It could ultimately lead to much worse problems with your general health and could lead to tooth loss.

Wow!  Lots of dental wives around these parts!  I was a dental assistant too before Madison and our move to NC...small world!
