Eco-Friendly Family

New Anti-Lurking Policy

Self-imposed. I would hate to lose the one eco-board.

I have two areas for discussion, though just like the pp former lurkers, I do not have anything interesting to say.

1. Did anyone read The Complete Organic Pregnancy? I live a pretty organic life already (better every day), but this book make me too depressed and paranoid to finish it. I would have thrown it across the room if it hadn't been on kindle. Just wondering if others found it useful, and if so, what parts.

2. I just mentioned this in another post, so apologies. I am really not sold on CD but I kind of want to be. Can those of you doing it sell it? I just envision poop everywhere, which is not something I want.

Thanks to those of you who have kept the board going!

Re: New Anti-Lurking Policy

  • CDing is honestly SO much easier and simpler than you would think!  I touch LESS poop with CDs because they do such a good job at containing blowouts.  In the beginning, when it's just BF poo, you don't have to do anything except toss the diaper in the pail.  When you move on to solids, you'll have to plop or scrape or swish, but it really isn't nearly as bad as you think.  First off, you're a mom so you'll be used to your child's bodily fluids (sad but true), and even if you were using disposables you'd have to clean their bottom, their clothes when the sposie couldn't contain it, etc.

As far as extra work, I do an extra load of laundry every 2-3 days.  It really isn't bad, especially because I don't go through as many outfits from leaks.  On top of that, my DS inherited my sensitive skin and the only sposies that we can use (for traveling) are the Whole Foods brand, which aren't cheap.  Everything else gives him a nasty rash, even the "all natural" and "sensitive" diapers.

When I was pregnant I was skeeved out by the poop thing as well, so we used a CD service for the first four months of his life (which was wonderful, btw).  When I got used to using them every day, I thought "this isn't bad, I could totally wash these", and looking at the money we'd save by laundering at home, it was an easy decision.  I loved my diaper service and it was a great transition for me to get the hang of mothering and CDing without the extra pressure of laundering and stuff.  I won't be using one for this baby because I'm already in the swing of diapering DS and it's just a little extra laundry, lol.

  • I'll be completely honest here: there is a (mercifully short) period of gross poop between EBF and soilds. But if you get a sprayer (or have a laundry sink, like me!) you don't have to touch it!

It's really easy. AND it'll save you a good $2k or so. (For me, I'd rather handle a teeny bit of poop and get "paid" $2000 for my trouble!)

Plus, (maybe it's just my kid, but) diaper rashes are zilch. Zilch. I'm on the same sample of butt cream I bought when she was born.

And I'm not up on the specs, but I'm sure somebody else can direct you to some links about the creepy chemicals in sposies, not to mention googling "dry max burns" to freak a pregnant woman out!

But really, you have to do what works for you and your family! Happy mama means happy family.

  • Love love love my CD, we just tried sposies after 2 years of cloth since we were on vacation with no way to wash (camping).  There is way more poop with the sposies they were gross and so much trash is made me sad and I normally have no problem with tossing things (I know I know not EFF)

  • That is all really useful, thank you! I did now know there was such a thing as a CD service...I think that might help me get used to the idea. I'll research in my area. Thanks, guys!

  • Wow! The CD service that I found in DC is much cheaper than I would have thought. I just might try it.

The beauty of a CD service is you only have to buy covers, which are pretty cheap anyway! If it helps you ease into it, go for it! You can always decide to quit and not be out but $30 in covers (which you could totally sell- the CD resale market is pretty great if you get a good brand).

  • Can't answer the first one.

Totally with everyone else on the sposies being WAY grosser part. I got more poop on my hand or busting out DD's legs with disposable diapers and wipes than I ever have with CD's. It's TOTALLY worth it. Ya like Kdello said, there is that "gross" stage of poop but for me it's totally better no matter what to spray or scrape than have poopsplosions in a paper diaper. ICK.

  • CD..are you cheap/frugal? Using CD for my 1st child saved me around 1500. Using it for my 2nd so far has saved me about 700 and she'll be wearing them for another year easily, saving another 600-800. I plan to use them for my 3rd child as well. Plus they'll have resale value of around 100 [not a lot but hey, ran you resell disposable dipes? nope!].

It's an extra 15-30 mins of work a WEEK. I do laundry 2x a week [it was 4x but my oldest is potty training now so it's just my youngest in the cloth]. I line dry and use pocket diapers so that adds to the time..with an all in one it would be less time.

I'm super lazy sometimes..but I had 2 in cloth diapers at the same time and it was no big deal.

Poop everywhere? not really. We dump the poop into the toilet and then toss it into the cloth diaper bin. It's once a day..sometimes twice. But to me it's worth it when I think about the massive amounts of disposables that would be rotting in a landfill if I didn't cloth diaper. and we're ONE family. It's staggering.

  • I didn't read the Complete Organic Pregnancy but did have the same reaction to Growing Up Green by Deidre Imus. Found it to be ridiculous - many opinions based on disputed theories or just her gut, unrealistic suggestions, reads like a stream of consciousness at times.  Yep, wanted to throw that book across the room.

  • Hi!  I didn't read all the comments, so sorry if this duplicates others' info!

    1. No, I haven't.  I find if something makes me feel like *** when I'm reading it, it probably doesn't mesh within my lifestyle.  I'd just stop.  Just because something is labeled natural or organic mean it's the ideal way to go for you.  I'm ok, but there are definitely people who are much more 'organic' or 'back to the earth' than I.  I don't know which way is right, but I honestly don't believe the 100%, all man made chemicals are horrible and are going to destroy your unborn child align with reality.

    2. LOVE CDing!  We've never had any of the massive blowouts that I have heard (and, unfortunately, seen pictures of) on the tri boards that seem to be expected with disposables.  Yes - we've had some poop leakage, but never up the back, everywhere explosion. I know people who use sposies for travel, and often they end up complaining that they have more accidents with them than with their CD's.  I love it!
