Breastfeeding

breastfeeding question, from 2nd tri

hi ladies. I have decided not to breast feeding. I was wondering after labor,do the medical  team make you breast feed the first time or can you decide you don't want to. I plan on using formula only.

Re: breastfeeding question, from 2nd tri

  • My experience was that it was totally my choice whether to BF or not.

  • It's not a law, they don't MAKE you, but they'll probably strongly urge you to try. You should make your intentions clear when you sign in.

  • They will let you use formula from the start if you would like- your choice entirely.  You may want to try to express some of the colostrum (first milk that your breasts produce) and get that to the baby in a bottle.  It is full of things that your baby can't get from formula (antibodies, etc) and is very important.

  • Kind of an odd question from a pro-breastfeeding board but no, no one will force you to BF.  They may ask if you want to try or assistance in BFing.  All you have to say is "no thank you, I plan on FFing."

  • I think the only reason they would urge you to BF is foe your benefit post partum, it gets your uterus to contract.  Which helps you stop bleeding, and as pp stated the colostrum is so good for baby even BF for a couple days does some many wonderful things.  I agree this is a strange question for the breastfeeding board.
