July 2011 Moms

Am I right in remembering that your DH is OOT during the entire workweek?  My DH has been working really insane hours and I've been going a little nuts being totally responsible for LO ALL the time.  I know it's not even comparable, but I don't know how you and military wives and others do it.  I'd be tempted to be bitter, but I know he hates it too and is doing it for the good of our family.

Any tips for staying sane?

  • Yes he's OOT M-F most weeks. Are you going to SAH? If so I'd find a MOMs club, MOPs, or meetup group. Yes even with little ones I find things to do. I won't lie some days it sucks, but I get him home at least part of the weekend, and he's not away months at a time in a dangerous area getting shot at. I try to call or text with friends at night to get adult interaction. I admit for now LO is mostly "easy" as far as being a good baby. And I have awesome neighbors who help give DD1 an outlet every afternoon (playing with their boys outside). Once LO is closer to mobile and we have a set routine I'll probably do gymboree classes again. I did them with DD1 from 6mo- almost 3y. My hospital also had a first time parenting program where we'd meet 2x a month and they had speakers covering common new baby issues (introducing solids, sleeping, language development.)

Sadly you get used to him being gone a lot. We did have a catastrophe today though, my baby swing died. Oh the horror! Now we get to try to fix it or borrow one.

  • We are hoping that this is temporary.  He was *supposed* to be taking half days of paternity leave around this time and instead this happened.  But he's a little concerned that things are just going to be like this for a while.  Ugh.  Thanks for the tips.  I have a weekly breastfeeding support group that I'm going to start attending and I'm trying to get better at taking people up on their offers of help.  I'm jealous of the first time parenting program -- it sounds really helpful.

Yikes on the swing!  GL figuring something out for it soon!
