I need some motivational help w/ my toddler/preschooler

I REALLY need to get the two of us out of the house - like 20 minutes sooner.  I'm a dawdler and I fear I'm making DD one too!  If I get her up too early, it seems like there is too much wiggle room for both of us and she keeps making requests for random things and I give in for a minute or two just to be nice, etc., but then it all adds up and then whoops - there goes 10 minutes.

What are some rewards I can set up for her that will work for short-term, get your shoes on so we can do ___.  I really don't want to promise that we'll do this or that at night/after school, b/c I'll forget anyway.

  • I asked a very similar question last week.  My 5 and 3 year olds are always making requests in the morning that slow down our routine.  Someone suggested making sticker reward charts for good mornings.  Charts to show all the chores that need to be done in the morning, etc.  For me, high fives when the kids get their shoes on is sometimes reward enough (but not usually).  I tried making it a contest to see who can get their shoes on fastest.  As long as I lose it is OK.

  • My 3 year old responds well to contests- " I bet you can't beat Mason and me out to the car" and he takes off and gets into his carseat.

I also occasionally tell him we can take the alternate route to school so we can drive by the fire station which he loves.

  • Posting a schedule has been really helpful for us.  As does not allowing my kids to watch TV or play with anything until they're done with Bfast and ready to go.  Usually they dawdle so much that they don't have time for anything else.  If I need to, I set a timer and have them race against the clock to get ready.

  • ditto strom and shouldb...  the set schedule, no tv at all, and competition.
  • As far as rewards go, how about a special snack in the car, being able to pick a CD/song/the radio station, maybe a special activity they can do in the car like those crayola wonder markers, or stickers and a special sticker book to put them in, mommy tells a story on the way to school/daycare, or get some kids books on tape to listen to on days she stays on track.
