Recommend your crib mattress pad

I'm having a hard time finding a crib mattress pad that ISN'T either waterproof or expensive.  And I'm confused about the issue of wool - absorbant but can have allergy issues? 

Do you like your crib mattress pad?  If so, tell me why.

    Why do you want a mattress pad if it's not waterproof? (Um, I mean that as a real question, I hope it doesn't sound snarky.) I used one of those waterproof pads you lay on in the hospital under her sheet and it worked fine.

    since the mattress itself is already waterproof, a waterproof pad is overkill. i just want the pad as a layer between the sheet and mattress, to keep baby from sweating too much.
