Ameda flanges

So I've been using the Ameda Purely Yours Pump for about a week now, and I LOVE it....I get so much more with it and it so much less time...but I have a small problem...

No matter what I do at the beginning, I am in nipple agony!  I am currently using the XXL, and have tried the XL inserts but there is no relief.  Anyone else have this issue too?  You have to get the nipple centered juuuuuuust right to avoid a hellish nipple pull and even then it's still a little painful.  Any suggestions appreciated!

TIA!

Re: Ameda flanges

  • Maybe cut back on the amount of suction? You can add in breast compressions (if you're not already) to maximize milk removal on a lower suction setting.

Also maybe you need a smaller flange if it's pulling too much of your areola in.

And lanolin those suckers up beforehand- when I forget: ouch!

Yeah it still does this when I am on the lowest suction and frequency setting...I already do compressions....and the output is fine, it just huuuuurts!  I I guess I could use the lanolin first - I've never done that.

  • I had the same problem!  At the hospital they told me to always go full force suction...that is not necessary.  Lower suction does not mean less output!  You may just still be sore from the higher suction.  I have the same pump and I felt much better after a few days of lanolin and lower suction.  Good luck!

  • Thank you for posting this!  I just bought the XL and XXL flanges b/c my nipples HURT, and it's making BFing painful.  The LC at the hospital also told me to set the suction HIGH.  I am going to try a lower setting.

About the lanolin - I've read to wipe it off?  I am using an olive oil based cream, can I leave that on?

I'm also feeling pain around the edges of my areola, where the edges of the flanges are.  I have large breasts.  Is that why?

No need to wipe off the lanolin. I am pretty sure u can leave the olive oil as well.
