very low back (butt bone kind of) pain-- new, after run

I have been a runner for about 5 years.  I have never had lower back pain in my life (I am 39), even during my pregnancy.

about 2 weeks ago, I started adding a 2nd longer distance back into my weekly runs (usually run 4 times a week, lift or pilates 3)... I had a baby in July 2010 and while I ran throughout pregnancy and after, I was doing mainly 2-5 mile runs during the week and 1 longer run on Sundays.   In about January 2011, I started 1 6-10 mile run on the weekends which was fine.

I introduced a 10 mile-ish run on Wednesdays and the first few weeks it was fine, then I started to get a mild lower back pain after most runs.  I would rest and it would be fine, then as soon as I did 2 longer runs (ie- my 12-15 mile on Sunday and then my 10 mile on Wed) my back would hurt again.

Could this be my shoes?  I think I am about ready for a new pair, but before baby, I would get knee pain when my shoes would start to go, not lower back pain?

thoughts?

Re: very low back (butt bone kind of) pain-- new, after run

  • It could be shoes if they're on the older side.  I tend to change mine fairly often (usually get a new pair - use them to train/run a half, then replace) and you could be absorbing more shocks with your back if they're not giving you the support.

Keep an eye on it though - I've done really stupid things running that weren't related to distance.  I once herniated a disc in the middle of a 10k, and I think it was like mile 3, so not very far along.  (The stupid thing was I finished the race and probably shouldn't have.) If the pain continues, it could be the beginning of something like that and the sooner you get some PT to help, the better.
