ok, so i admit i've been a little lazy with the pumping. i have a ameda purely youres and havn't been using it very often for the last month or so. i have been pumping for the last 10 days 2 times a day, as LO is not a good naper and this is all i can really find time for. i massage my breats towards the nipple for a couple mins before i start. i get about 1oz per side at each time i pump. i'm getting a little frustrated because i thought the amount would be increasing by now. i usually pump for 10-15mins, but i have tried going up to 20mins and it doesn't seem to make a difference. i know LO is getting enough as he is growing well. i really want DH to be able to feed him, but it takes me 2 day or more to get enough for one feeding. anyone have a situation like this? what did you do to increase the amount you're getting?
Re: sugestions for getting more milk when pumping
This...after the morning feeding I wait about an hour and get 6 ounces. I do the same thing after his last nightime feeding. GL
I got lazy with my pumping too. I've got the Medela Pump in Style Advanced. Sometimes I can get 3-5 oz and other times I'm lucky if I get 1 oz. Now that I'm back at work I pump when I first get here (I'm the only one in my dept here, so I can cheat and use my storage closet to pump), and then again at lunch, and then use our lactation room later in the work day...
I'm trying to boost my supply using Traditional Medicinals Mother's Milk Organic Tea. It seems to help out, so hopefully after consistently drinking the tea I'll see better pumping results.
The lactation nurse at my hospital said that pumping can be frustrating since it isn't always consistent! She's right. I get soooo frustrated spending 15 minutes pumping for 1 oz! And like you said, if I pump longer it doesn't seem to make a difference!
Let me start of by saying that I pump purely to help bust my supply (and I am lucky if I get an oz from both breasts) but I have found the pumps tend to be quite inefficient. I typically pump 10-20 minutes depending on how much time I have and how much milk there actually is and then I will hand express.
Hand expressing generally gives almost as much as I pumped in the first place. I usually use the pump bottle set up to collect the milk and then will turn on the pump (and create a vacuumed with my hand) to get all the milk to the bottom of the bottle. Hand expressing gets a little messy at times but worth it for me.
