Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How many ounces does your 4 month old devour?

Okay...1st time post ever.

So...I primarily breastfeed (hardly ever pump), however...I do supplement with formula for our last feeding of the day, generally after bath, right before sleep. He has a hard time even finishing a 4 ounce bottle. (I use the NUK bottles, if that matters...)

Anywho...I just read a post a few seconds ago, about "SAMPLE FEEDING SCHEDULE". When did your baby start drinking more than just 4 ounces of formula and move to 8? I just wonder how many ounces he is truly getting per breastfeed. (At his 4month (last week) appointment he weighed 16pounds and was in the "75th percentile"...I just wondering if I should be supplementing more and increase his intake of formula)

Sorry for the 20 questions...FTM jitters...

  • My DD will only take 2-3oz of BM from a bottle at a time. BM changes (gets more calorie dense) as LO gets older so a BFed baby will take in the same # of oz of BM from 1-6 months, as opposed to a FF baby whose # of oz increases.

If your LO is following his growth curve, there is no reason to increase his supplementation.

  • My LO usually drinks 6oz per feeding but sometimes she still only drinks 4oz of it. If your baby is BF he is probably eating more frequently than my LO who is FF. So in the end he is probably getting just as much because he eats less more often. I think 16lbs at four months is a good weight since that is what DD was at her four month checkup and the doctor said she was doing great. I do find it interesting that both of our LOs weighed the same at four months and you were told that he was in the 75th percentile because I was told mine was in the 95th percentile. Weird.

  • DS just drinks BM, and he gets 5 oz bottles. He finishes them most of the time, but has never went past 5 oz. He eats about every 3-4 hours.

Oh wow, I didn't know that. Learn something new everyday!

  • DD takes 6 oz every 3-5 hrs. Every 3 hrs during the day, longer stretch at night.

Do you have a Wii fit? There is a program to weigh your baby. You could weigh him/her before a feeding, BF and then weigh directly after to see wat they are getting.

FWIW: my 4 month old is FF. He eats 6oz at each feed, and sometimes 8oz for his first feed of the day.

  • DD drinks anywhere from 4-6 oz per bottle 5x per day (she is 5 months now, but it was the same when she was 4 months).
  • Well my LO didn't go straight from 4 oz to 8. She typically takes 6 oz with one 8 oz feeding a day. She made the switch to 6 oz right around 4 months and the 8 oz feeding (her 1st feeding of the day) got added in about 2 weeks later.

  • OMG!! sorry for the Multiple posts!  I don't know what happened!  G has been drinking 5 oz/ 5 - 6 times a day since she was 3 months.  Our pedi told us to increase only at 1/2 oz to oz at a time.  I have tried to up her to 6 but her little belly can't handle it.
