Success after IF

WWSAIFD? (NIFR)

Okay... I posted on another board yesterday about anna not napping. Overtired me, i felt like she hadnt napped in weeks. So of course anal me has been keeping a log over the past few weeks to try and track Anna's patterns. I went back through them last night. This non-napping thing has really only been the last 4-5 days or so. I guess it's easy to feel like it's worse than that when you're so exhausted. BUT... even though the non-napping thing has only been the last 4-5 days or so, in those 4-5 days she's also now waking up twice at night (as opposed to her typical once), had slightly elevated temperature twice and her eating has changed. She's now suck suck suck push away rinse repeat, screaming if you lay her flat while eating and playing with both ears.

all of these are behaviors I attributed to teething, but her second tooth FINALLY cut during the hurricane after messing with us for over 2 weeks. After her first tooth cut, we had a few days of complete peace and even a STTN episode. This time, nada.

do we think she's already teething again? Or might she have an ear infection and I'm an awful mother for not recognizing it sooner?

should I call the pediatrician this AM and take her in? I'm NOT an alarmist about Anna's health. She's never had a sick visit in almost 9 months. But her behavior is definitely changed in the past week and maybe I should be more concerned about it then I have been.

thoughts?

  • If you think it might be an ear infection you should call the pediatrician just to be sure.  BUT, Daniel teethed continuously for 3 months.  He got 8 teeth in rapid succession and his behavior was exactly like you describe.  Is that tooth all the way up?  Because sometimes he got worse when it first came through.  I thought as soon as they broke the surface it would feel better but that wasn't the case at all.  Often that's when he screamed even louder and once there was even a little blood. Sad

Just to give you a little hope - I thought he would NEVER sleep or nap.  I kept that log every day desperately trying to discern a pattern.  He started teething at 3 months - just when people swore he would start sleeping more. HA.  And he always fought going to sleep.  I really thought this would be a lifelong battle.  But now he goes to sleep at bedtime and stays asleep until morning.  And he almost always takes 2 naps a day.  He still doesn't like going in for a nap.  In fact he now yells when I pick him up at naptime - but he falls asleep.   So this doesn't mean Anna will NEVER sleep.  Teething SUCKS.  I remember the first stretch when he wasn't teething and I was so happy for him because he was a completely different little guy and he was so rested.  This doesn't get you any sleep now, but at least I can offer some hope.

  • Susan - thank you. That actually does help, because Daniel has been through the same thing and you didn't tell mr to CIO to fix it. I feel like thats mostly the advice I've been given and it's not for us.

so you wouldn't call? The tooth is BARELY out of the gum. Not even halfway up yet.

  • I would call dr. B just to rule it out. And you are NOT an awful mother if it turns up she has an ear infection! There's only so much we can do when they aren't able to communicate with us just yet :). You are doing fabulous! Oh, and treat yourself to a Starbucks drink on your way in to her office :). You deserve it!

I never did call - but we were there monthly for weight checks and they always checked his ears.  Usually we had just been there or were getting ready to go again.  He's never had an ear infection.  And I just never "felt" like it was his ears.  But I'm sure the pediatrician would understand why you want to be sure if you feel like you want to call.

We did do a little 'sleep training' but it was when he needed it - meaning there was nothing wrong with him and he was exhausted from not sleeping.  He also just stopped going to sleep while nursing and had no way to fall asleep.  I use sleep training lightly because it wasn't bad at all.  But I believe when a baby is screaming in agony he/she needs his Mommy or Daddy.  You can't fix teething unfortunately!  I'm in tears just remember the times I held him while he screamed.  For some reason he doesn't seem to be in pain right now either even though something is definitely going on.  His gums are completely swollen some days but there's no agony yet at least.

Ditto this. I always figured it was worth my $20 copay to rule out an ear infection when I wasn't sure if it was ear or teeth causing the issue. And definitely stop at Starbucks on the way :)

  • Ava went through the same thing, and it was always teething (just constant, unfortunately).  But, I took her in maybe two or three times to double check that there was no ear infection.  They probably thought I was a neurotic mom, but it made me feel much better!

And yes, a Starbucks drink is in order for you, I think.  :)

  • If you give her pain meds, so she act happier?

That's about all my pedi had to determine if it was teething or not.

That's an excellent point. To experiment, I gave my whining, bottle pushing away, over tired child Motrin at 9am. She took the rest of her bottle and is now fast asleep on my chest. I'm about to see if I can get her in her crib, but I think that was the test I needed.

    thanks!

This is a great idea. We went through this yesterday...J is normally a great napper sleeper but is a late teether. We had two 45 min naps and he was a HOTT cranky mess all day.. NO FUN.

I don't love to just give tylenol Motrin but I was desprate so I gave him some at 4pm and walll La..Happy child...HE is cutting his top two teeth..

But I would also go in and her ears checked anyway jstu to be safe!

  • When I knew for sure he was having a problem with his teeth I would give him Motrin about 15 min before bed.  That way he would be able to nurse and then get some rest.  He couldn't eat either when it was bad.  Poor things.

  • i would definitely take her in to get checked for an ear infection--can't hurt! and you are certainly not an awful mom! nobody can tell the difference between teething and being sick.

hope she feels better soon and you can get some rest!

  • Ditto the above!  Teething and ear infections look very similar in my house.  They also go hand in hand, meaning that poor guy often gets an ear infection while teething.  Also, the pain of both is relieved by Motrin, so DS's response to it doesn't tell us a thing.  I'd get her checked for peace of mind.  GL!

I can just see them comparing notes.  "If you really want to get her running, try this..."LOL
