Pregnant after a Loss

when to use humidifier and ceiling fan?

We will be having the baby sleep in our room with us for a few months and I was curious about two things:

1.  When are you supposed to use the cool mist humidifier?  Is it all the time or just once summer is over and the humidity drops?

2.  We have a ceiling fan in our room and I sleep with it on every night bc DH is like a furnace.  Will this make the baby too cold?  I'll sleep with it off if I need to but I really don't want to.  TIA for your suggestions!

Re: when to use humidifier and ceiling fan?

  • With DS we did not use the humidifier until he was about 6 months old and had his first cold. I think it was October. We did not use our ceiling fan when DS was in our room, but as long as the baby is not directly under the fan and is dressed warmly enough, it should be fine. Good luck to you!

  • Don't think you need the humidity till the ambient humidity drops in the fall. As for the fan, some sources I've read recommend air flow in LOs sleeping space and a cooler temp as part of an overall good sleep/ SIDS avoidance strategy. Those sources talked about use of a small fan in LOs room, but I think the airflow is the point. So long as LO is not in a draft and is dressed appropriately, I'd think you'd be fine.

This is what I heard.  I have no idea when to use the humidifier...I guess once it gets too dry in your house for you.  I get nose bleeds from dry air, so that's when I think we may use it.

  • My house gets quite dry in the winter so I will probably start running the humidifier in November. However, if my house wasn't dry, I would only run it when LO has a cold.

As for the ceiling fans, I'll be keeping mine on until it cools down significantly. LO will never be directly under one.

  • I don't know about the humidifier, but I think I read somewhere that the fan is good for the same reasons the ladies above said....it can help reduce the risk of sids.

  • My DD was born in August and our pedi recommended using the humidifier right off the bat (not just in the winter). They have a lot of mucus, etc in their sinuses the first month after they're born and it helps with clearing it (well, that and using the bulb suction :)

We still actually use the humidifier. Besides helping their little air passages, it creates a little "white noise" in their room so they can't hear the noises-that may wake them up.

  • We only used humidifier when DD was sick and older than 6 months.  We've always had a ceiling fan on her, in our room and then in hers.  She slept swaddled and was a hot-blooded kid so the fan is a constant.

  • I can't help with the humidifier, but as far as the fan goes, I have read that having circulating air helps to reduce SIDs risk.  The current recommendation is to have a fan going in the baby's room.
