Ever since I was old enough to think about children, I have always wanted to name my daughter's middle name after an aunt that passed away. I was very close with this aunt. A week after I found I was pregnant, I learned a friend from high school was killed in a motorcycle accident. My hubby liked my friend's name and suggested we name the baby after her if it was a girl. I had a little girl. I've had some ppl say it's weird to name a baby after a passed loved one. What do you think?? Is it weird or ok?? I love my daughter's name and would not change it. And I had never heard of it being weird before.
Re: Naming your baby after a friend/family member that has passed.
A few weeks before Kaitlin was born my great aunt Barbara Elizabeth died. We gave her the middle name Elizabeth to honour her.
My father died when I was in Kindergarten and my younger brother has always had his name picked out for his first son. His first baby is due in October and is a boy. He will probably name him Russell. I wasn't comfortable with the name for my children (we had girls anyway so it didn't even come up), but if he wants to honour our father that way it's fine by me.
DD is named after my sister, who passed away. Her middle name was Elise, and my DD is named Ellissa (DH vetoed the name Elise because it was too similar to a friend's). I would never be able to use my late sister's first name. I have a hard time even hearing the name. Her middle name, however, was also special and not as well known in my (extended) family.
That being said, I think naming your child after someone incredibly special is a wonderful thing to do!
My daughter is named after my great grandmother. Her name was Josephine Eliza. My daughter is named Elizabeth Josephine. My grandmother cried when I told her we were naming her after her mom. I think if my great grandmother were alive today she would be honored.
I have a niece that was named after HER great grandmother (so my grandmother) and she hadn't passed yet. She loved having that connection with my niece. My niece will always have that connection to her as well.
