EF alternative to spraying for bugs

I stopped allowing DH to spray the house every spring for bugs about four years ago.  We haven't really had problems since, but noticed that this year we have a ton of ants and spiders.  Now that the gardens seem to be overflowing and I am bringing a lot of stuff into the kitchen, we have a large number of gnats that I just can't seem to get rid of.

I do banana and ACV traps for gnats and that seems to help.  Does anyone know of any alternatives to spraying that would help get rid of ants and/or spiders?  I really don't want to have the house sprayed, but DH said that if I don't find an EF way to get rid of the critters he is going to spray this fall.

  • We have ants in our rental (UGH) and have been putting out a 50/50 mix of borax and sugar at night. We've only been doing it for a few days now but it has definitely cut down on the number I have seen - and apparently if given enough time it will kill them all entirely.

I just make little piles near where I see ants and then sweep it up in the morning before the kids can get to it. I know Borax is just basically soap but of course I still don't want them eating it. :)

  • We use Diatomaceous Earth around the door on the outside part. Its for things that crawl. When I first read it about it, it said it was okay to be used in doors, but I don't really want it near my girls. There's also something called Orange Guard that you can get at Whole Foods that I am okay with using inside. Actually, it smells pretty good too.
