As a FTM I have lots of irrational fears
....but for some reason I get so nervous about having LO swaddled at night. Reading all about no blankets while sleeping and all the precautions for SIDS has me freaked out! I keep thinking that the swaddle will loosen and go over our DD's face!
I must redo the swaddle 10 times before a nap or bedtime. Right now DD is sleeping in a RnP in our room...I would like to move her to her crib soon but I know I'll be so nervous about the swaddle and it's the only way she gets good sleep. We have the swaddle blankets with the velcro and the sleeper with a swaddle....so I can get both REALLY tight.
Does anyone else feel this way or am I a crazy person????
Re: Why does swaddling scare me???
You're pushing the crazy irrational fear a bit far with this one.
**breathe** and try to relax.
When it comes to SIDS (and lots of kiddo stuff), I think some rules are made to prevent any and all accidents, so the no blankets in the bed thing is more the prevent big squishy blankets than anything else - but to keep it simple, the rule is simple. If all blankets were always a big risk, then I'm with you - I'd be terrified!!
One other option is to swaddle and then place a sleep sack OVER the swaddle. It will contain the blanket no matter what.
My blog
Swaddling is one of the best things we have done so far. I am scared of not being able to swaddle him anymore.
Try to relax. Those Velcro swaddlers are pretty hard to break out of for little babies. The Miracle Blanket is even more secure if that would make you feel better. You could even try the Woombie. It zips and has no loose fabric.
I freak out about everything, and I have a 2 1/2 year old as well.
So I understand. BUT you're fine. My first DD hated being swaddled so I never paid attention after that on doing it well, and I never got any practice... my second DD LOVES it and won't sleep if she isn't. I guess I figure I am up every few hours with her anyway, and she makes noises in her sleep, so I will wake up if something changes. Just do it, lay your LO down, and relax!
Also, IDK how mobile your LO is, but mine is 2 weeks and can roll onto her side, lift her head some, etc. Which makes me feel better because if she needs to, so can move around enough to get the blanket out of her face.
