So Sad and Angry re: news article

Warning: sad -- infant death in article:

https://news.yahoo.com/husband-defends-wife-calif-babys-death-001246183.html

My son was born with congenital muscular torticollis, which was diagnosed at 2 months (my pedi sees a baby at birth, 2 weeks and then 2 months).  At that time he was also noted to have flat head syndrome--eventually diagnosed as severe brachycephaly.  He was in PT for the torticollis for 7 months and wore 2 DOC Band helmets for his brachy.  He has full ROM of his neck and no lasting effects. And his head is now round.   (He does have speech/developmental delays which are likely unrelated to this.)

When I read this, I got so angry.  Both of her son's conditions--which were basically the same as mine, only with plagiocephaly instead of brachy, were correctable. He was not disabled--and even if he were, that is no reason to kill. I cannot accept PPD as a defense since this was premeditated. She drove there to do this. And she seemingly took off his helmet prior to it.  Not that a cranial remolding orthosis is a protective helmet, but you never know... it could have helped.

G-d bless this little boy. Gone far too soon.

  • I was just going to post this. I was so sad to read it @ work today. That poor baby. DD2 was diagnosed with torticollis at 2 months also. She has mild plagio, but not enough to go ahead with the helmet. I've seen articles calling this baby handicapped? Um, no not with just torticollis! I hate that they're using the PPD defense. She freaking validated her parking after throwing him. Sick sick sick!

  • Yeah, that is not disabled. It's not fun to deal with, but it is so fixable!

To me, she is obviously mentally ill-- I would think post-partum psychosis would be a more appropriate DX.

  • She wasn't even in this county legally! She had previous traffic violations? The whole thing just doesn't make much sense.

DH had a colleageue with PP psychosis; it's worlds away from "baby blues". She never harmed her child, but 15 years on she is still institutionalized. I try not to judge. We don't know the whole story.

In many civilized nations, infanticide under 1 year of age is automatically PPP.

Wow... 15 years. How tragic. :(

And you are a better person than I.  I try not to judge people but often fail.
