Thanks for all of your advice earlier! (I did read Ferber's book twice. I refuse to let P cry if I am not sure about the rationale.) Anyway, tonight he cried for 25 minutes before falling asleep! This is much improved over the first time we tried. He didn't even need a second 10 minute check in! I hope that the rest of the night will go as well. it just breaks my heart to hear him cry, but I know in the long run it is the best thing for him.

Re: Night One of Sleep Training
In the beginning it's so tough! I had DH do it because I couldn't handle listening to DS cry. Thankfully it only took about 3 - 4 nights. DD was a different story and took a lot longer but it eventually worked. I think it's important to do what you feel is right. If you can't handle waiting it out 10 minutes at first then go in after 5 minutes. Go with your gut and do what feels right while trying to follow the sleep training philosophy.
I'm happy to report that both of my kids are happy to get in their crib at night. I put my 2.5 year old and my 6 month old in their cribs awake and they can put themselves to sleep. They wake up in the morning in a great mood playing and talking in their cribs. DD sleeps a solid 12 hours (or at least she's in her crib 12 hours) and DS sleeps 8 hours and wakes up to eat and goes back to sleep for another 3 - 3.5 hours.

I didn't respond to your earlier post sorry.
But we also Ferberd J around 7/8mths. He wasn't really napping great and he was waking multiple times a night..The naps though were making me the most crazy!
I also had to have DH do most of the hard work. I wasn't strong enough and knew what my limits were. The first two days were rough but at like day 3 he was napping like champ and his night sleep was soo much better. He would wake for his bottle and go right back to sleep...
Now at a year, J still takes two naps (even though today was a fluke bad nap day) and puts himself to sleep every time. At night he goes to sleep at 7ish and wakes at 7..We still do lots of cuddles and some rocking so you don't have to cut that out entirely..Mommy and baby are much happier that we are all well rested..
2 kids that sleep in the same room for 3 naps and bedtime. I can't have kids up, down, all around, keeping each other up, etc. Thanks to Ferber we go to bed awake, without a peep and sleep happily. Listening to your child cry plain sucks. Giving them the gift of sleep is so good though.
You're doing great and you will be so thankful for the result!
