What can I use to get rid of this stuffy nose??

I'm pretty sure I have a cold and I cannot breathe out of my nose whatsoever. Do you ladies know for sure of any safe decongestants? I've read a little bit online, but I keep reading mixed answers. Have any of your OB's told you what's safe and what's not? Thanks so much!

  • Neti pot. It seems gross, but it is the most amazing thing ever. It's a sinus cleanse. You pour warm saline in one side of your nose and it flushes through your sinuses and comes out the other side and brings the yuck with it! I use it all the time, pregnant or not. I used to get sinus headaches once a month or so and they lasted a few days each time, now if I feel it coming on, I use my neti pot a couple of times in a day and it stops in its tracks!

  • Sounds like a preg symptom to me :)
  • Neti Pot!  You'll thank me later.

If it's really bad, you can use steriod nasal spray (per package directions because it's highly addictive).  I used it early in my last pregnancy.  My OB said I could only for very short times.  I thought it was a no-no but read in the Mayo Clinic book that it's OK.

But that's only if it's bad bad bad.  If it's just a little bad, NETI POT!

  • I am experiencing congestion too. I need to use the netipot tonight! :) It's actually a new symptom for me - only got worse the last day or so.

So do you think Afrin would be okay?

This! but make sure you use boiled or distilled water....recently a man caught an amoeba (brain eating deadly disease) and died from using a netipot w/tap water because the pest was in his water system.  But it sure does work and clears your sinuses!

My doc said it was.  But she had an "eh" look on her face.  I think the danger is the addiction, not the actual drug.

  • I'm using Saline (non-medicated) spray. It's definitely helped. I'm taking it in the morning and at night right now. I diagnosed myself with Pregnancy Rhinitis (check it out) it's common for women to feel like they have a cold/cough. No fun, but no nausea yet for me!! (yet) praying for none! :)

  • I have bad allergies and I'm usually stuffy but lately it is worse.  I've used the neti pots before and they are pretty great.  But you can also try this stuff called Simply Saline, it's a can of saline that you shoot up your nose, that works really good in a pinch.
