Success after IF

This is what I get for going to an MD who loves MWs

So, I went to the back up MD today for the MWs.  I really wanted her to check my cervix, tell me there was no change, some change, whatever, and make a plan.

She refused to check me.  She said she would not introduce any bacteria or stir things up by checking me.  I told her how bad I felt yesterday and she seemed to think I was being dramatic too.  WTF?  She poo-poo'd everything the hospital in NC did.  She said she would never have done the BMS shots and thought everything they did was overkill.  And maybe it was, but I was miserably cramping at 24 weeks and dilated a little.  I see overkill all the time in my hospital.  I would never want overkill in my normal pregnancy and delivery (hence the homebirth) but I kind of think this warrants it a bit.  When your best friend has some mild cramping at 27 weeks, waits until the doctor is open to go in, is 5 cms, goes to 10 cms pretty fast (with just mild cramping) and delivers in a hospital without a NICU and the baby dies, you WANT overkill.

She appeased me by ordering a cervical length u/s which I will get on Friday.  I am still feeling yucky.  My whole body aches and my back is killing me.  She told me to drink more water and start drinking coconut water (which I ran out and bought every brand and flavor Whole Foods has),  I know nothing more now than when I walked into her office.  I didn't even get a doppler check :-(

She then begged me to not have anyone else check my cervix (I pulled out the high-risk antepartum nurse card at the end so she didn't think she was talking to an idiot-so she knows I could drop trough at any time at work and have any of my doctor friends check me).  I just want to make sure that it is SAFE for me to work 12 hour night shifts.  I will be soooo mad if I find that I am dilated or effaced more and I was allowed to work.  I DO NOT WANT A PREMATURE BABY.

Ok- thanks for letting me vent.  I mostly wrote this out to hear myself type.  I am just frustrated...

  • I'm with you 100%, and you need to stand your ground. Bacterial infections (if it were to even happen) are a LOT easier to treat than 26 week'ers.

  • I am totally with you, too.  Even with the +FFN and dilation, she didn't want to check you?  I would totally have someone at work even do an u/s to check your cervix just to make sure all is ok.

Good luck - hope you feel better tonight!

  • I am really sorry she didn't ease your mind.  I had bleeding with Carly around 20 weeks.  I went to L&D and they said my cervix was slightly open.  After that, I had weekly manual cervix checks and FFNs.  I was worried about bacteria, but I was more worried about not knowing what was going on in there.  I lived 45 minutes from the NICU.  I ended up delivering at 34/6 and I was never dilated anymore until I showed up in labor and then I progressed really quickly.

It always pays to play it safe. I hope she cooks and cooks and cooks in there.

She doubted EVERYTHING they did.  She even said "I have no idea how accurate their FFNs are and I am not going to do one today.  You come to me with 6 ctxs in an hour, and I will do one."  I was only up to 3 ctxs in an hour yesterday (about every 20 mins).  But I want to know why I feel SO crappy.  She didn't even address the body aches and horrific back pain I started having again on Sunday.  She told me to buy a pregnancy belt. Ugh!

  • I don't know why she is not taking you seriously-it may not be something bad happening, but if you are feeling crappy then she needs to look into it, not brush off everything that happened last week-you are not supposed to be dilated at 24 weeks (obviously!)

Stand up for yourself and listen to you gut.  Good luck!

  • Holy crap I would have walked out and walked right into an MFM's office.  You need to see someone else....you need a second opinion!  Hang in there momma!

  • Oh, man, you must be so anxious! I am so, so sorry. Please get another opinion!!
  • I'm so sorry that she didn't take any of your concerns seriously. You need to go to someone that will listen, and show some compassion. I hope one of your coworkers can assess you, and hopefully give you some peace of mind.

  • I definitely would have marched myself to an MFM. So what if what they did in NC was crap?! If another doctor was really concerned, shouldn't you show a modicum of concern?!

I hope you get an u/s soon and that it shows things staying nice and calm in there! (((hugs)))

  • I've seen a lot of errors due to laid back attitudes when it comes to PTL. So glad she's going to order the u/s, just wish she wouldn't wait until Friday. If you have any more frequent contractions, I'd try to get it moved up. Hang in there.
  • How frustrating. I had PTL at 29 weeks. I was spotting brown and just knew something wasn't right. When i called my MFM's office the on call thought i was fine but checked me just to be sure via u/s. Yeah i had lost an cm of cervical length (that was on the low end of normal to begin with) and i was funneling and contracting. 7 weeks of bedrest later, i delivered a 36 weeker who may have been born a lot sooner had the dr. not taken me seriously.

  • Ditto the others...if you are worried, I would definitely get checked before working that much, notwithstanding the advice of your doc. Not to scare you (although I know, with your job, you know this) but I had an appt a week before I delivered at 23 weeks and cervix was fine, long, closed. Felt "off" the following Sunday but nothing I could pinpoint, and we went shopping, I was on my feet a fair amount. Pelvic pain began Monday night around 6 pm, by 8 pm it became a noticeable pattern and at the hospital at 10 pm I had no cervix and my bag of water was bulging...in other words, it all happened FAST and I will always wonder, if I only took it easy the day before, might things have been ok? I had weekly cervical checks from 16 weeks on in both subsequent pregnancies with nary an infection. The risk of that just paled in comparison to the risk of losing any more babies to prematurity.

  • German - and I mean this with love (even though I'm pretty new here and don't know you) - but I don't want to have you join us on the Preemie board.  If your gut is telling you that something is off, trust it (which you seem to be doing anyway).  Sounds like it's time to find a new doctor/MW or at least get a second opinion if you can - Friday is a long way off.
