Pregnant after a Loss

Not so great ultrasound today

Sorry I haven't been around ladies I'm a bad bumpie.Sad

Had another growth ultrasound today and the babies are measuring two weeks behind but both weigh 4lbs. I'm freaking out because they've been measuring a couple of days behind for a while but two weeks seems like something to be concerned about. Everything else seems to be okay I'm just freaked out because their measuring so small.

I called my doctor but probably won't hear back from him until tomorrow I really want to know what he thinks. My induction date is set for September 22 and I really want to keep them in until then but if their not growing like they should I'm scared they might want to take them out earlier and that scares me.

Thanks for listening I've been crying all day and dh doesn't understand why I'm so upset but two weeks sounds like a big deal to me. I just want them to be healthy!

I don't know much but I do know that it can be common for twins to be born  tinier than a single baby so maybe there is a good reason they are measuring small. Plus, it seems to me techs and drs have a hard enough time measuring one baby so I can imagine it can be hard to measure two in there. T&P are with you everything gets resolved.

  • Oh no, I'm so sorry. So your doctor wasn't there to talk to you at the u/s? Did an MFM do it or just an u/s tech? What did they say? I assume when they say 2 weeks behind they mean for twins? Otherwise I would think of course they are smaller than singletons.

I hope you get some answers ASAP so you can stop worrying.

My doctor wasn't there it was just the ultrasound tech and she didn't even tell me hardly anything. She just told me their weight and that they were measuring 32 week and I'm 34 weeks. She couldn't tell me anything which just made me more upset. I'm just hoping to hear from my doctor tomorrow cause I can't stop worrying and I googled earlier and that was definetly a mistake.

I'm assuming that twins do measure smaller than singletons but it still worries me. I feel like my body is failing my babies by not giving them what they need to grow.

Can you ask on the multiples board? I wonder if he meant 32 weeks for a singleton. SO annoying that he didn't explain. I mean some twins are born at only a teensy bit heavier than yours so I be they are fine. So sorry you are worrying.

  • Could 2 weeks behind be somewhat normal for twins?  I can understand wanting to talk to your doctor right away.  4 lbs. sounds like a really good weight for them to be at at this point.  Do you know if they checked for proper blood flow through the placenta(s)?  The reason I ask is because I get ultrasounds monthly to check on the baby's growth and to check the blood flow because that can cause growth issues.  Try not to worry too much.  Good luck with talking to your doctor.

Thank you hazie, I just keep telling myself I need to keep them in there for three more weeks until my induction but I'm such a small person I don't think they have the room they need to grow anymore. I know she checked the placenta and blood flow and their heartbeats and those were all good as far as I know so it's just that their measuring small. I'm just worried.

  • Hopefully they just mean that they are measuring at 32w for a singleton, I'd assume it would be less dramatic of a difference if they were comparing it to your average twins.

My hunch is that if there really is that much of a discrepancy that your doc will monitor them even closer.  Hopefully they don't  have to get them out earlier than 9/22 (holy cow is that getting close!).

I'm not sure if there is any validity to this or not, but I've heard rumor that Ensure shakes can help the littlest LOs bulk up inutero.  Figured I'd mention it as it can't hurt.

I'll look into the shakes I just have to make sure they don't have a whole lot of carbs in them. And yea I'm starting to kinda freak out about how close it's getting to them being here. I really gotta get started on my washing but being on my feet hurts so bad now that I don't even want to get off the couch.

I don't know the number of carbs in them, but if you remind me tomorrow I can check.  I happened to get some myself today just out of curiousity.  They are the aisle with the Tums at the Commissary, at the far end.

I feel you with the feet thing...and I've only got one in there!  When I'm on my feet for two long they ache so bad.  Hips and lower back as well.  Hopefully you feel up to working on the washing.  I'd recommend folding sitting down, in hindsight I wish I'd done that.

  • Big ((((Hugs)))) sweetie.  There are lots of stories of babies born early that were seeming small on the u/s and were completely and utterly fine.  My own LO's growth kept slowing down, which terrified me, but the doctor's were fine with it.  Now that he's an outside baby, he's making up for it by growing at exponential rates.  Hang in there, I'm sure it'll work out fine.  I'll also add your LOs to my prayers as I already mention you and your mom in them.

  • I have never experienced a preemie, but I just wanted to let you know that I had a friend deliver twins at 32 weeks because the little girl had stopped growing and the blood flow through the cord was not sufficient.  They were both small at birth, but they were only around 3 pounds, the boy obviously bigger than the girl.  They were released from the hospital somewhere between 35 and 36 weeks.  The little boy, who actually was thriving in the womb and was bigger, had a few minor setbacks with his breathing, but they both did amazingly well and are now at home.  The little girl actually did better than the boy, I think because girls' lungs mature faster.  So, you are a week past the point they were born, and you have a very good chance of them doing just fine.  They may just have to stay in the NICU a week or two to gain some weight.  Good luck and try to relax and trust in your doctor.
