Am I the only one???

DD is going to be 5 months old on Saturday so we are nearing the 6 month starting to try baby food milestone. I have already decided that I am planning on feeding her baby food from a jar just like I did for DS. Now days it seems like EVERYONE is making their own baby food (which is totally awesome!) but I just really don't have the time to do that and DS did just fine with canned baby food. But I can't help feeling some what guilty like I should be making my own baby food for LO too!  Is there anyone else out there using canned baby food?!

Re: Am I the only one???

  • I plan on making some of LO's food, but I know myself well enough to know that I won't be making all of it.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with using canned baby food.  It is healthy, age appropriate and tasty.  Both of my nephews were fed canned baby food, and they're very healthy little boys.

I was also fed canned baby food growing up, and I think I turned out alright!

  • I made some of my kids' food, and some of what they ate for sure came from a jar.  Aint no shame in it!  Really, though, the time period they ate purees was really short, and I moved them pretty quickly into just eating mashed up versions of whatever I was feeding myself and DH for dinner.

  • We're using jars of baby food. Gerber. :)

  • We'll be doing at least 90% store bought.  In an ideal world I'd like to make food for her, but I don't even cook food for myself (dh does all the cooking) and I'd be kidding myself to think that I'm going to make food for her.

  • Its great to know I am not the only Mom using store bought baby food! phew! Thanks for the feedback! Smile
  • We'll probably do a little bit of both. We have some excellent farmer's markets in this area, which I'll take advantage of for LO, but I don't plan on making all of his foods.

  • DS gets pre-packaged stuff, too! Sometimes I'll give him little pieces of what we're eating, but that's rare.

  • I'll mash up some fruit from time to time but for the most part, we'll be buying baby food. I'm a working mom, there's no way I have time to make baby food!

  • We'll probably do a mix of homemade and store bought. So far, I just tried to give him a little smidge of mashed up avocado, and I couldn't even tell if he swallowed any of it, or if it just went all over his face.

I bought some organic brown rice baby cereal and organic whole grain baby oatmeal at Big Lots super cheap, and I also got a jar of organic pureed peas for twenty-five cents :-)

  • I don't have any qualms with store bought! I am going to try to make some of it, just because it's cheaper and money is going to be REALLY tight. Right now, we buy diapers and wipes and that's about all DD costs, but once she starts on solids that is really going to change the budget, so... We'll see how it goes. I'm really bad with cooking and such, so knowing myself, it will still probably be mostly jarred baby food for her.

  • We will do both.  I just wanted to mention that I made sweet potatoes the other day and couldn't believe how easy it was.  I'd never even used a steamer before.  It took about 20 minutes and it made a TON (two ice cube trays) from just 2 potatoes.  It will probably last for weeks.  Those I will continue to make but I have no desire to, say, prepare oatmeal in a crock pot or make my own meat purees.

  • I thought about making my own baby food, but between starting a new job and school I don't know how much time I will realistically have.  Ideally I would like to still try to make some, but I'm not going to beat myself up if I can't make her baby food. DD1 was fed from jars the whole time and I was a SAHM at the time...

  • Like PP, I know I'll used some canned/jarred (already have two big boxes of variety packs that someone gave us for a shower gift!)  but I plan to mostly mash up things we are already eating, to whatever consistency she needs at the time.  I have a stick blender already (which someone on this board said worked for purees) and one of those cheap mini-choppers you can get on Black Friday for $4.  I'll make a few veggies and things for her that we don't usually eat (DH will eat anything, I'm picky about veggies) but otherwise will work around what we are already using for the most part.

  • We will most likely be doing store bought.
