Breastfeeding

For those with forcefull letdown...

The sidelaying position works well, but what do you do when you cant lay down to feed the baby?  Like out in public?  Bring a pumped bottle?

I was wondering the same thing. I have figured I would not be able to feed while out (so I plan everything around feeding times)...or yes, a pumped bottle. At least until feeding becomes easier.

  • keep a cloth diaper handy and spray into that when LO comes off, I'd do all this under a cover, because if people find NIP odd, they'd really get a kick out of this.

  • When I feel letdown happening, I put my hand on the upper part of my breast and press hard to slow the flow of milk.  It seems to help.

Once my son was about 3-4 months old he was better able to manage the letdown and we could nurse in any position.  Prior to that I would try to find a nursing room or a public place (like a Starbucks) with overstuffed arm chairs.  Then I would slouch down so it was like I sitting in a recliner chair.  I would lay LO on my chest on his tummy to nurse.  It wasn't as awkward as it sounds when I try to explain it now.  Basically you are trying to take gravity out of the equation a bit, when I would sit like this milk had to go against gravity rather than with it.  Good Luck

  • Try to feed in a sort of reclined position. I used a lot of dressing rooms.

  • I try to feed in either a dressing room or a doctor's examining room (we visit those a lot for me).  But most of the time, she has a pumped bottle while we're out and I pump some other time at home.  I've got an oversupply (you probably do too), so I just keep track of how much she has by bottle and how much I pump out of my breasts every day she has them.  If I end up even or with slightly more, I count it as a success.

DD is 6.5 weeks now, and starting to get a lot better about managing the letdown, so I have hope that we may one day NIP.
