XP: Anyone else's LO suddenly get Acid Reflux after 3 months?

Just a little background info here: LO has been on formula (Earth's Best) since about 11 weeks. For a handful of reasons, we weened off of BF and transitioned her smoothly. She took bottles super easily and we just started upping her bottles to 6 oz (though sometimes she'll only take 5 oz of it) because she still seemed hungry (she's about 13lbs, maybe more). We also upped her nipple size to level 2 (Dr. Brown's) and in the past week or so, she's spitting up more, kicking around while eating but still taking the bottle and wasn't showing signs of wanting it taken away. Then a couple of days ago, she started spitting up even more (which I assume means we were giving her too much?) and is now kicking around while we give her the bottle and is eating maybe 3-4 oz and that's it. She also let out a few screams out of nowhere this morning and cried in pain. :(

So my question is, have any of you experienced LO getting AR at about this age? I believe it sounds like AR symptoms but am trying to just keep an eye on it. Any advice would be appreciated.

 TIA!

  • It may be that her tummy is getting fuller faster from the new nipple, which would cause her to have gas pains.  My LO had reflux earlier on, but it started becoming a bigger problem at 12 weeks (not eating at all, throwing up).

  • Our pedi diagnosed DS with AR when he was 1 month old. We would have NEVER guessed it because he never spit up or even really seemed to have gas/tummy problems at all. When I asked him at his 2 month check-up about how long he would like him to be on the AR meds he said that he seen in most babies an increase in issues from AR between 3-4 months which will then settle down between 6-7 months. He said by 6-7 months, their weight has outgrown the dosage so he just takes them off of the meds anyway. I agree with pp that it could be your LO's tummy getting full faster & causing gas pains but it may be worth checking with your pedi just to make sure it's not reflux.

  • Thank you both so much for the response. I'll try lowering her bottle amount to see if this helps, otherwise, to the Dr. we go. :)

  • Considering the crying in pain, you may want to address it with the pedi.  However, DS had the same kicking, fussing and then spitting routine.  I did the following:

    • fed him in a high chair, boppy, bouncy seat or carrier- any place other than my arms- this helped A LOT
    • burped him as soon as he seemed to stop taking the bottle and then reintroducing the bottle after the burp
    • put him upright, and in a stationary position for about 20 min. after feeding    ( bouncy, boppy, high chair or carrier)
    • fed him less if he spit up a large amount frequently.
