High(er) BP

Everytime I've had my BP checked, it's been normal. In fact, even when I've been in pain, or more stressed/anxious than normal, it's fallen in normal ranges (I've had nurses comment on this).

I have a monitor at home that I use to check my BP regularly (several times a week). Yesterday I checked it because I was having some weird symptoms- tongue and lips tingly, very hot, dizzy, etc. We were out and about so I stopped at the Walmart BP machine and it was higher than normal for me- 137/98. At the doctor I've never had one over 120/80.

So when we got home, I was still feeling cruddy, same as above but also swollen feet (which may have been there when I was out, I just didn't notice it). My home monitor read my BP at 139/99.

So obviously these numbers aren't horribly high, but they are definitely high for me. Oh and out of curiosity I tested a little while ago and it read at 132/89.

Should I just keep testing and see how it goes? Since it's not horribly high? Is it somewhat common for BP to creep up towards the end of pg?

Re: High(er) BP

  • Have you called your doc? The 139 isn't terrible, but the 99 is concerning....your doc would probably want to know if you're having BP spikes like that.

Are you still having any of the dizzy or tingly symptoms? Either way, I think it warrants a call to the doc. They might want you to come in for a quick urine sample or to take blood.

Nope, not dizzy or tingly today. Feet aren't swollen either, though that might not mean anything because I haven't been out of the house yet plus it's super nice out today, almost no humidity.

I will put a call in to the doctor, thanks for your help!

Oh! But I do have a question. I was just there on Friday and gave a urine sample, where I'm sure they checked for protein. Would it be possible that a problem like that would crop up after a couple days? I'm sure it's possible, just wondering.

it can crop up in a few days,  could be nothing but cant hurt to call.  if the swelling goes down from elevation and being in air conditioning that is a good sign.  the last 2 weeks i would wake up just as swollen as if i had worked a 12 hour shift.

  • My bp was 140/101 when they decided to send me to L&D for induction.  The doctors said that you can go from slightly high bp to pre-e very quickly and without many warning signs.  Definitely call the doc.  Good luck!

  • Call your doctor.  Mine was high (140/90) at last Thursday's appointment.  No protein in my urine, bloodwork was fine.  I monitored it at home over the weekend and it never went that high.  Went back to see the OB today and it was even higher than the Thursday appointment.  Still no protein in urine, but had to give more blood and am doing the 24 hour urine collection and will have a growth/fluid level ultrasound next week.  She said it is either pre-e (in which case we'll discuss induction) or just high blood pressure (in which case they will give me blood pressure medication).  Either way, if you have high blood pressure you should contact your doctor.  Good luck.

  • hopefully just a difference between machines; manual BP cuffs are much more accurate than the electric ones they often have at stores, etc.

  • Amanda, I would give your doc a call right away.

I don't want to scare you, but I developed severe pre-e with my first pregnancy in a matter of hours.  I was 40 weeks along & I went for my 40 week appt.  My BP was higher than normal but protein in urine was fine.  My m/w was concerned enough to do an NST & some bloodwork but when everything checked out ok she let me go home.

By that evening my BP was crazy high like 200/110 & I felt like sh!t.  Called the hospital & they told me to get in immediately.  When I got there protein was in my urine like crazy.  They told me I was lucky to get there when I did because otherwise I would have had a stroke.  I was put on magnesium sulfate & delivered early next morning by emergency c-sec.

Now I am not saying this is going on with you, but just wanted to highlight how quickly this sickness can appear & it's not something to be taken lightly.

Keep us posted & hopefully all is good!

  • Thanks ladies for all the advice and help. My doctor said to continue to monitor it at home until tomorrow, when I'll be having a regularly scheduled BPP. She said to have them check my BP when there and then let her know. They will decide from there.

Most of this afternoon it has ranged from 135/89 to 139/94. Hopefully it will go down more by tomorrow. Oh my doctor also wants me to lay down on my left side as much as possible.

  • Late to the party, but I was just sent home from L&D AGAIN after being sent for high blood pressure. Mine got up to 162/94 at the OB office... but after resting a while we got it down to 140/85. They still sent me to the hospital, where they had me lay on my left side on the monitor while they did labs... bp ended up going down to 115/74, so they sent me home since my labs were clear. This similar situation happened Saturday as well. I have swelling, but the blood work and clear urine have them convinced it's not pre-e.

That being said, they are probably going induce me Thursday, and I need to closely monitor myself for signs that I should go in.

So, if you get any weird symptoms - visual changes, SEVERE pain under your ribs, swollen face, be sure you call...
