Success after IF

If your LO took reflux meds

how old were they when they stopped?  I forgot to ask pedi at Liam's 6 month appt if we could try to wean.  I have a feeling he may not need them anymore... he rarely spits up now.  I also remember hearing that they grow out of it.  What did your pedi say?

thanks!

Re: If your LO took reflux meds

  • I don't remember for sure, but I want to say it was around 6 months.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

  • Our pedi said they normally don't need them any more between 6 months and a year. However, when we tried to wean DD off of her meds, it was a disaster that ended with an exorcist-like show in our family room. So at 2, she is still on prevacid. But the pedi has said that this is unusual and if her symptoms get any worse we are going to a pediatric GI.

  • Around 6 months our pedi told us that we could start weaning him. He was off the meds completely by 8 months. Good luck.

  • Our pedi said that they usually outgrow reflux by 6 months.  Our DD stopped taking her Pre.vacid around 4-5 months, I think.

  • Matt will be 2 next month, and he is still on Prevacid. He was on Prilosec before this, but when he had his adenoids removed, the doc looked at his esophagus, and she could tell by it that the Prilosec wasn't working as well as it should be, and switched him over. We have a f/u next month, so I'm not sure what will happen then.

  • we didn't stop totally until around 9 months.  we started dropping doses though...we kept the lunchtime dose the longest at the rec of our doc.
  • DS started around 4-5 weeks and he we started to wean him off around 5.5 months - at 6 months of age he was off the meds and he had totally outgrown the reflux.  His reflux was treated by a Pediatric Gastro

  • Our pedi said to take DD off the meds and within a day or two, we'll know if she still needs them.  We tried it once and she was definitely still having reflux issues so we started back up with the Pre.vacid, but when we tried again around 3 months, she was perfectly fine and hasn't had any issues since.  He said it's just trial and error.  My DD wasn't really spitting up, but instead would choke and stop breathing due to reflux, so thankfully she outgrew it earlier than normal.  I would think 6 months is a good time to try weaning off the meds.
  • I tried at 6 months and he wasn't ready.  I tried again at 7 and it worked.

However I am considering putting him back on because he pukes up everything that isn't a puree. He has 3 teeth but we still can't give him anything with any texture.

  • G was on his Prevacid until he turned 2. We tried a few times earlier, but it seemed to irritate him. Teething, unf. agitated his reflux, so until those started popping up as often we stayed on the meds.

S2 is now 9m old, and he def. still needs his meds.

You can try weaning by decreasing the dosage for a few days, if he does fine, lower the dosage again until you're done.

  • we tried every few months after E was about 10 months, he was weaned off them late, close to 2

  • Right around 6m, when she started sitting up more and taking solids. We just kept the same dose (never upped it) till she was basically taking nothing for her size/weight/age and weaned her.
