Purees- how long did you do one meal a day?

I am just starting purees with A.  We are going slowly, but how long til you moved up to 2 meals a day?  one month, 2 months?  Sooner than a month?  Longer than 2 months?

Why do I not remember with Nicholas?  I swear if Ava wasn't my last child, I'd write all this down.

Oh and while we are on the subject, Ava still does that thing with her tongue and pushes the food out.  She gets some of it, but a lot ends up on her bib.  Should I stop and try again in a week or just keep going (maybe she needs to get the hang of it)?  She likes the food and doesn't seem annoyed when I stick the spoon in her mouth.

Re: Purees- how long did you do one meal a day?

  • I went really slowly but primarily just b/c it was easier for me given all we had going on at the time.  Around 5.5 months, I started with one meal a day (at dinner time) and then just last week (so, 7 months), I introduced a 2nd meal (at breakfast time).  I think I'll add the 3rd meal (lunch) around 8 months.

To be honest, I wasn't in a huge rush to add 'solid' meals since I know it's really for practice, not nutrition, at this age and since this is my 2nd child, I (like you) knew what I was getting into once I introduced a meal so it wasn't as exciting as the 1st time around.  I waited so long between the 1st and 2nd meals b/c we were vacationing for ~5 weeks and I didn't want to add a 2nd meal until I returned from the vacation.

  • I don't think there's a formal guideline here. Just follow A's signs. If she watching you eat and is mad she's not eating with you, feed her.

I would keep trying with the spoon right now. Don't push it (like 2-3 spoonfulls might be enough), just so she continues getting the hang of it and learning to push food to the back of her mouth.

  • I didn't start until 7 months.  So since it was kind of late, I only did 1 meal (breakfast) for a few weeks.  I moved to 2 and then 3 within a month.

Now, they eat 3 meals and 3 bottles.  Makes life a lot easier.

  • We started at 6 months and added a meal every month or so.  So, but 8-9 months he was getting 3 meals, along with his bottles.

  • Like you we started at 5 months and added a second meal around 7 months or so, then a 3rd meal around 9 months. She still has the tounge thrust which hayden had then. Just keep trying and she will get it.

  • I have no idea on the tongue thrust thing...   we waited a bit longer to start with Anna and never dealt with that... so yeah, maybe take a break for a week?    I don't know.

We started her on one meal a day at 6 months, and I want to say we did a second meal by 7.5 months.   So about a month and a half.    My pedi just recommended 3 meals/day by 9 months, so I think I split the difference.
