Pregnant after IF

24 hr urine collection

What's the trick to this? They gave me the little hat to collect my urine in and transfer it to the jug, but when I peed, half of it went in the toilet.. I'm really dreading this since I get up to pee at least once a night and it will require a trip to the kitchen to retrieve my jug.. ((pardon the iPad paragraph)) I was moved to our COB clinic (complicated OB) because of my fluctuating blood pressure. With my anxiety it's been 150/90 but since I've gotten into the 2nd trimester it's been 130/73 and 2 days ago 143/81 -- which was taken RIGHT after I jogged to my appt because I was late. I'm keeping up my moderate excersise to try and keep it down -- in good news, my early glucose came out normal! Yippee!

Re: 24 hr urine collection

  • How did you put the hat on the toilet? From what I remember when I worked in the lab, we closed the seat on it and put it at the front of the bowl.

    Good luck with that.

  • I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if you missed the hat and wasted some you have to start over. You should call you OB!

  • They are a royal pain. Nothing like trying to figure out when you can try and collect it.  And I hate having to do it in the middle of the night and lugging that big jug to and from the fridge. No real tricks but just make sure you urine is actually going into the hat when you're peeing.  I've done a ton of them before for my diabetes and just did one recently to get a baseline one because of the pregnancy.  Sometimes those hats can shift around when you sit down.  And like pp said, if some of the urine went into the toilet, then you need to start the 24 hour period over.  It's not going to be accurate even if it's just a little bit of urine that's missed in that 24 hour period.

    Good luck!

  • I have to do these all the time 'cause I have kidney disease. Forget the hat. As others said, you need to start over (sorry). What I do is get a big cup (like a large plastic McDonalds cup) and go in that, then pour it into the jug. I usually have to set an alarm to time my 24 hours. Remember, you discard your first morning urine, but that's still when the 24 hours starts. So say you wake up at 7. You discard that urine, then collect all urine until 7am the next morning. Also, you want to be sure to bring in the urine the day your colelction ends because the proteins and things start to break down fairly quickly.

I hope that helps some... definitely use the cup. It's so much easier.

Ditto, all of this. I have to do it frequently as well due to kidney issues. It's a heck of a lot easier to pee into a large cup than the hat or whatever.
