creativity and a 13 month old

So I got some non-toxic finger paints, and  some crayons. Is 13 months old too early to expect her to do anything but eat them? (obviously, she'll need a little help!)

What are some other fun creative activities I could do with her?

Do you put a tarp (shower curtain? newspaper?) down under the work area, or buckle them into a high chair?

I'm thinking the bath tub might be the best place to learn to finger paint, ha!

Re: creativity and a 13 month old

  • My friend and I did messy masterpieces (fingerpaint on canvases with vinyl words so when you pull the vinyl up you see the words...) with our girls at 14 and 15 months old, and they loved it! We didn't have any fingerpaint eating, but neither of our girls are ones to eat everything anyway. I bought a $3 vinyl table cloth from Target and just taped it to the floor in my kitchen. We did have to help them quite a bit, but it was really fun. :)

This gives me hope! I don't know why it didn't occur to me to try this sooner :)

  • Oh, yeah! It really is a lot of fun. "Paint" was one of DD's first words, seriously! My friend and I are both "messy kids are happy kids" type of people and we paint as often as we can get together. I still have pink paint on my camera from our first painting experience, but I can't bring myself to wash it off because it is special. :) Here's a pic after a little clean up. :)

  • We don't have a high chair. T does coloring, finger painting, and clay. He loves them all! The only thing he has been known to try to eat is clay so I just watch him super carefully. He can do chalk, markers (not my favorite - they get everywhere), and crayons. For paint I usually just let him go outside. He has also done it in the bathtub. None of those activities last very long but T loves them for a few minutes so we keep doing them. I'd say give it a shot!
