Please help me decide what to do! (bed) *long*

Ugh, what a crappy weekend of sleep! =(

Saturday night R fell out of his bed (recap for non FB friends), about a week ago we converted his crib into a toddler bed. The crib included a short rail that was like a bump to keep him in. He did fine for a week and rolled over the rail (only like 4 or so inches of rounded wood).

We (ok, I) freaked when I saw him missing on the monitor and heard him crying. We took the crib apart Sunday, put twin mattress and box spring on the floor with a double rail. He went to sleep fine but was out of bed at Midnight, not sure if he fell off the end or just got out. I put him back in, and he woke up crying about every hour. I slept like crap worrying about him. He is currently asleep, but sleeping backwards in the bed. I am thinking of either scrapping the whole thing and putting the crib back up or putting a body pillow under the bottom sheet at the end of the bed to keep him in........we are so tired. I hate making changes like this and regretting them! He never climbed out of the crib, we switched because we thought he was suddenly sleeping bad due to being uncomfortable.  I will also add he does have 2 bottom 2yr molars just peeking through....hindsight make me think this was the issue.

  • we made the decision that once he was out of the crib w weren't putting it back together.  we had about a month of bad sleep. ethan would wake up nightly and his whole bedtime routine changed.  when he was in the crib he would walk upstairs we'd rock him for 30 seconds and lay him down.  all that changed when he got in the bed. his sleep is still messed up but we are going to work to on that when we get back from vacatoin.

Even now he is waking up crying for dh. i don't know if it is a new routine or he is really scard

  • Hmmm...I do not know, but this makes me want to hold off on the toddler bed as long as possible.

  • I'd stick with the bed, but I also said we wouldn't go back once we moved him to the twin bed.  G used to sleep all over the place in his crib, and I worried about him in a twin bed, but he definitely did get the hang of staying put after a little while.  Falling out of the bed is scary (for us) - I remember sprinting down the hall when G fell off the end of the bed.  It will get better!
  • We put his crib mattress at the foot of the bed. He did roll off a few times in the beginning but just kept on sleeping on that. Good luck- I'd stick with the bed. He'll be fine!!
  • I wouldn't go back to a crib. He might have a few (or more) rough nights, but he'll get used to it I bet.

When we switch Evan I plan on making it a big deal, and let him help pick out new bedding and set up his big boy bed. That way he'll be excited about it... I hope!

I've also seen books about transitioning to a bed... maybe reading some of those would help ease his fears?

  • If I were you, I would stick it out with the mattress or toddler bed, and just try to put something around the edges so if he falls, he won't hurt himself. But that is easy for me to say when I am not the one waking up with him 6x a night. Good luck to you both!

  • Thanks ladies....lack of sleep has me feeling defeated! haha We will stick it out, my dad brought over an adjustable side rail that they had. I put it on the end, hoping it helps!

I put a body pillow at the top since we don't have a head board yet. He lost his doggy overnight too, so hopefully all this keeps he and his friends contained!
