DH and I were given the side eye this weekend...

at the beach this weekend by a "grandpa" type who would not let up about us putting a sun hat on Jake!

We had been at the beach all day, it was hot and we kept him under the umbrella or in the water, sprayed him down with suntan loation like 5 times and MOST of the time he was wearing a hat. I should also say tht J HATES hats..rips them off most of the time..so the fact that he wore one for any part of the day was amazing! We had been playing in the water most of the day and the hat got wet/damp so we took it off to dry it out..

 J was under the umbrella(again his head was sprayed with suntan loation)..and a "grandpa type" came up to us said "I don't want to butt in, but your kid really needs a hat"..fine..we smiled and said he has suntan loation on his head and is under the umbrella. But thanks for your concern..

We then decided to start to slowly pack things up..I take Jake down to the water to play again for a bit, while H got things together. I then come back up to the sand w J and go down to the water again to rise myself off. I get back to the blanket and the "grandpa" again is saying something to DH. At this point, H isn't as friendly. Says thanks for your concern but we are his parents and know whats best for him. THe grandpa then tells us that we are being negelctful and that J can get sick from the sun..

At this point everyone is staring at as so we decide to leave..It was nap time anyway. We finally get everything together and as we are walking up the beach the "grandpa" says well finally you are getting that kid out of the sun!

I just couldn't believe it!  I get saying somehting to us once. but three times..really? I was pretty proud of myself for not ripping this old man a new one.  I just smiled and walked off but really people need to MInd there own business sometimes!! UGH soo annoying. Ohh and J's head isn't burned at all!!

    Wow that's more than a "side-eye" and totally inappropriate.  I wouldn't have been able to keep my mouth shut on the second time and I'm pretty non-confrontational.  We're going to the beach for a week this coming weekend I hope no one gives us any lectures.

    People like that piss me off!  One time to voice concern...maybe...but three times???  Screw you grandpa!  It's like people think that you have no clue. 

    I had M in the pool at my IL's when she was just shy of 2 months.  She had a swimsuit that was a rash guard top and bikini bottom....what skin was exposed was coated in baby sunblock (the kind that is approved for newborns)...she also had a hat on.  I got several comments from several family members about her being too young.  Umm hello...she is my baby and I get to decide what is okay and what is not.  Thankfully my DH backs me up in this.  I had to tell my MIL that I did not want to hear her opinion about it anymore.

    Sorry you had to deal with a jerk like that!

    Exactly.  My daughter doesn't wear a hat at the beach and we were just there for 5 weeks.  She is doing just fine -- didn't get burnt and was certainly not adversely affected by not wearing a hat.  Some people just need to worry about themselves instead of focusing on others.
